Assessment refunds still taking bite out of Luzerne County budget

Dominic DeLuca has been the leader on the Cornell University men&#8217;s cross country team this fall. Nothing displayed that more than his performance in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on Friday at Van Corlandt Park in New York.The Dallas grad suffered a mid-race back injury but fought hard and finished 15th to lead the Big Red to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. His time over the 5-mile course was 25:29.4.&#8220;Dom has been an absolutely phenomenal team leader all season long,&#8221; said Cornell assistant coach Mike Henderson, who works mainly with the cross country team. &#8220;It was unfortunate that he had the injury but he still battled. I have no doubt that he will bounce back at the regionals (Nov. 10 in Buffalo, N.Y.). And I expect him to be a contender to advance to the NCAA Championships.&#8221;Henderson, who also works with Cornell&#8217;s distance runners, is expecting big things from DeLuca on the track, especially during the outdoor season.&#8220;We certainly expect more of the same great leadership and competitive spirit from Dom,&#8221; Henderson said. &#8220;He is someone who will be in contention for Ivy titles, contribute big points for the team and will also have a great opportunity to advance to the NCAAs in the spring.&#8220;We are going to enjoy Dom&#8217;s final season with us because we will certainly miss his presence next year.&#8221;Good debut for HockenburySyracuse redshirt freshman cross country runner Dominic Hockenbury competed in his first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Friday in Louisville, Ky. He helped the Orange capture their fifth straight title.The Lake-Lehman grad finished 20th out of 126 runners with an 8,000-meter time of 24:01.4. Syracuse totaled 27 points, the lowest score by a winning team since 2003.A point for WeinstockJunior defender Rebecca Weinstock played in all 19 games with two starts for the Drexel field hockey team, as the Dragons finished 7-12 overall and 2-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play.Weinstock, from Wilkes-Barre (Wyoming Seminary), collected her first collegiate point when she had an assist in a 3-1 league victory over Towson on Oct. 20 in Philadelphia. She entered this season having played in 33 games her first two seasons with the team.Gearinger helps FordsThe Haverford men&#8217;s cross country team, ranked third in Division III, captured its fourth straight Centennial Conference championship on Saturday in Gettysburg, and junior Dylan Gearinger had a big part in the effort.The Berwick grad finished fifth out of 99 runners, fourth best for the Fords, with an 8,000-meter time of 25:37.3 to earn first-team all-conference honors. Gearinger was a second-team pick when he finished sixth in the race as a sophomore.Marchetti leads the waySenior Angie Marchetti took individual honors and led the Waynesburg women&#8217;s cross country team to its first-ever Presidents&#8217; Athletic Conference championship on Saturday in New Wilmington.The Hazleton Area grad covered the 6,000-meter course in 23:18.67 to finish more than 11 seconds faster than the runner-up. Marchetti finished sixth in last year&#8217;s race. The Yellow Jackets took the team title with 31 points.First award for LawsonSophomore Lydia Lawson was named Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for her play with the Elizabethtown women&#8217;s soccer team. It was the first league honor of her career.The Holy Redeemer grad had a goal in a 2-1 non-league loss to DeSales on Oct. 24 and three goals in a 4-0 league victory over Juniata last Saturday. She leads the team and the league with 31 points on 15 goals and an assist. The Blue Jays take a 9-6-1 record into this week&#8217;s league tourney.An honor for BolerFreshman Payton Boler was named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference first team for her play with the Bryn Athyn field hockey team. The Wyoming Valley West grad led the Lions and was second in the league with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists.She had five goals and two assists for 12 points in an 11-0 victory over Sweet Briar on Oct. 17 and scored both goals in a 4-2 loss to league-leading Morrisville on Oct. 20. Bryn Athyn was 2-12 in its first season of competition.Mention for HardySophomore Amanda Hardy was a Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention for her play with the Keystone women&#8217;s volleyball team. The Tunkhannock grad leads the Giants in total blocks with 51 and in points scored with 230.5.She is second in kills with 179 and has 87 digs, 21 service aces and 16 assists. Keystone, the No. 4 seed, is hosting the CSAC Tournament this week in La Plume.Reed&#8217;s a veteranJunior Madison Reed played in all 19 games with 16 starts for the Hofstra field hockey team, with the Pride finishing 7-12 overall and 1-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. She scored a goal in a 2-1 non-league loss to Columbia on Sept. 15.The Hazleton Area grad has played in 58 games with 42 starts and has four goals and three assists for 11 points thus far in her career. She&#8217;s also one of the top defenders on the squad.Senior game for KrupskiSlippery Rock&#8217;s Kailee Krupski has been invited to participate in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II Senior Game on Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky.The Crestwood grad has five goals and an assist and three of her goals were game-winners &#8212; in a 4-3 victory over West Chester on Sept. 23, a 3-2 triumph over Kutztown on Sept. 26 and in a 1-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Oct. 17.Krupski has played in 71 games with 66 starts and has 16 goals and 11 assists for 43 points for her career.<style>
