<p dir="ltr">One of the best things I did during my time at Wilkes was get close with my professors &#8212; for a number of reasons.</p><p dir="ltr">I was really afraid to talk to my professors when I first started college. I didn&#8217;t want to bother them, and I was nervous that I would ask a stupid question.</p><p dir="ltr">Sometimes I wonder if that&#8217;s why I didn&#8217;t last in my first few majors.</p><p dir="ltr">There will always be someone who makes you feel like you are bothering them, but by and large, I have found that professors would rather you come and talk to them than be wrong about something &#8212; plus, in general, professors like to talk about their disciplines. They went through a heck of a lot of schooling on the topic to get where they are, so they had better be interested in it.</p><p dir="ltr">And, don&#8217;t forget, you pay their salaries.</p><p dir="ltr">One of the reasons talking to professors has been important to me is that nothing helps you understand a subject you&#8217;re interested in like having a conversation with a literal expert. How often do you have that opportunity when you leave college?</p><p dir="ltr">It feels really good to be able to bounce your own ideas off of someone who knows a lot more than you do and have that person tell you where you are wrong. You become better than you were before. As a learning addict, it&#8217;s a dream-come-true.</p><p dir="ltr">Since, again, professors usually enjoy discussing what they study, their enthusiasm often helps me see why they think the subject is so interesting &#8212; even if it&#8217;s one that I wouldn&#8217;t necessarily spend a lot of time reading about on my own.</p><p dir="ltr">By talking to an accomplished academic, you learn how to be one. It has helped me build my vocabulary, construct supporting arguments and better understand concepts and the world around me.</p><p dir="ltr">Whenever I end up learning from a professor with whom I&#8217;ve spoken at length on the subject, I always do better &#8212; not because of preferential treatment, but because I know what kinds of things are important to that instructor. Sometimes that&#8217;s half the battle on an exam.</p><p dir="ltr">Lastly, I&#8217;ve gotten better grades in general since I&#8217;ve developed positive relationships with my professors. Again, not because of favoritism, but because I don&#8217;t want to let them down.</p><style>
