Mazula & Team Navy get wild victory in WVC Girls Soccer Coaches Senior Classic

<p>In the final game of his high school soccer career, Berwick&#8217;s Ken Marshman fired a shot past the opposing goalkeeper for the second goal of the game and help spark the Red Team in the Wyoming Valley Conference Senior Classic game on Monday.</p><p>&#8220;The end of my career is bittersweet because we all go on to college to do bigger and better things, but it sucks to know that I will never be putting on my high school jersey again,&#8221; Marshman said. &#8220;I was trying to put any shot on goal I could because you know it was technically the last game in high school, even though it wasn&#8217;t for my school.</p><p>&#8220;So, I was out there doing whatever I could to get it in the net.&#8221;</p><p>Marshman looks to continue his athletic career in college, but whether it will involve kicking a round ball or an oblong one, he is not quite sure yet.</p><p>&#8220;I plan on either pursuing college soccer or kicking for football, I haven&#8217;t decided yet,&#8221; Marshman said. </p><p>The Red Team won Senior Classic Boys Soccer game, hosted by Wyoming Seminary at Nesbitt Stadium, 9-3.</p><p>To open the game, the Blue Team controlled possession of the ball for the first 15 minutes of the game, putting a variety of shots at goal without anything touching net.</p><p>Coughlin&#8217;s George Oko opened the first score at 23:02 and the Red Team carried the game from there.</p><p>Following Oko&#8217;s and Marshman&#8217;s goals, Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s Jake Gurtis squeezed in two more goals and Meyers&#8217; Johnny Torres added another one to give the Reds a 5-0 halftime lead.</p><p>&#8220;Great competition all around,&#8221; Gurtis said. &#8220;You get all the best talent, senior-wise, from across the Wyoming Valley Conference, so it was not easy, but we still had a lot of fun playing.</p><p>&#8220;It was great to represent my team and make a nice impression. Wyoming Valley West has been strong for the past four years, and I hope that can carry on. I wanted to leave a good mark on the conference.&#8221;</p><p>Starting the second half, Dallas&#8217; David Chopyak from the Blue Team wasted little time getting his team on the board, finding the net only a few minutes in.</p><p>Just as fast as Chopyak scored a goal, Red Team&#8217;s Nick Bazadona from Wyoming Valley West responded and capitalized on an assist from Meyers&#8217; Corey Manganiello.</p><p>&#8220;It was definitley a great time going out there and playing with the guys that you&#8217;ve been playing against since freshman year,&#8221; Gurtis said. &#8220;Everyone&#8217;s got a lot of great talent, so it was fun to come out one last time.&#8221; </p><p>Coughlin&#8217;s Josh Anstett and Marshman scored the final two goals of the game for the Reds.</p><p>&#8220;It felt pretty good to score a goal because I usually don&#8217;t do it during the season,&#8221; Anstett said. &#8220;It was nice to have all the seniors out here playing together, and the competition was a lot better than some of the regular-season games. Hopefully, I can play soccer for a few more years.&#8221;</p><p>Blue Team&#8217;s Josh Kalna from Dallas scored at 8:33, while Dallas teammate Andrew Francis put one in with only 14 seconds remaining.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m definitely going to miss it,&#8221; Gurtis said. &#8220;But I know that everyone will be successful as they go on to play college, or whatever they do. It was a joy playing with them these past four years, and against them.&#8221;</p><style>
