<p>There is no room for turmoil in college.</p><p>I discussed in a previous column that college related turmoil is a challenge, but that there&#8217;s a way to build in time for that.</p><p>But what about turmoil outside of your college life? How are you supposed to account for that and deal with it? I&#8217;ll tell you what; it isn&#8217;t easy.</p><p>I&#8217;ve always known that reading Aristotle was a challenge, and I&#8217;ve learned that I should spend extra time going through his work, highlighting and taking notes. The man found the most complicated ways possible to say anything. Imagine how difficult it is to read Aristotle when you have about a million other things on your mind.</p><p>It takes hours.</p><p>I don&#8217;t have hours.</p><p>My well-being responds to being neglected &#8212; I spend hours reading Aristotle (or doing some 100 other school-related tasks), distracted and frustrated. I spend some time reflecting on a painful experience. I go to bed late. I wake up early. Repeat. Sometimes I actually start to feel physically ill.</p><p>Rest during troubling times is paramount. But it is also important to pay attention to the worry, or the painful situation. Not dwelling on it, but paying attention to it. Bottling it up has its own consequences. What are you supposed to do?</p><p>I know that this is how it is in the &#8220;real world.&#8221; I know that I&#8217;m just getting practice for that right now. I should be thankful. If I could just stay home for a week because I&#8217;m upset, that would be of no help to me, because there is seldom another situation in the world that allows for that.</p><p>A lot of hard things are a matter of practice, and there&#8217;s a choice here.</p><p>There&#8217;s a chance to learn how to better rationalize through emotions &#8212; not turning them off, but understanding what has you so emotional, why you feel so strongly about it, and how you can transform that negative experience into strength.</p><p>The other choice is to succumb to the negativity and let it override what&#8217;s important to you. I know a lot of people don&#8217;t have an apparent choice to avoid this. It&#8217;s a process, and it&#8217;s very much a process for me.</p><p>If something is important to you the way that learning and finishing school is important to me, I think the process is worth a fair shot.</p><style>
