Ex-Northwest teacher cleared in court

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8211; Several of the greatest wrestlers in Coughlin history made the trip to their old stomping grounds on Wednesday night.</p><p>Ten of the dozen 100-win wrestlers in school history were on hand and recognized prior to Wednesday&#8217;s Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 opener against Crestwood as they also welcomed a newcomer to the prestigious 100-win club, Josh Brown, who achieved the mark this past weekend.</p><p>The current team didn&#8217;t disappoint the alumni as the Crusaders defeated the Comets 48-24 by winning eight of the 10 contested bouts.</p><p>Alex Banaszek, the school&#8217;s first 100-match winner in the 1980&#8217;s was on hand along with grads from the last 15 years including Josh Popple, Brad Emerick, Frankie Mahmoud, Bobby Hawkins, Craig Kittrick, Brett Kittrick and Mike Brown, who is Josh and twin brother Jake&#8217;s older brother.</p><p>&#8220;It was pretty cool. I grew up with all those guys and it was nice to see them so hopefully they come back when I get it,&#8221; said Jake Brown, who is at 84 career wins after a win by fall on Wednesday. &#8220;I think the entire team did well. I really do. We just have to keep improving.&#8221;</p><p>Both teams wrestled without some of their top wrestlers. The Comets were without returning district runner-up Jordan Miale and Saige George, while the Crusaders missed Darren and Patrick Clarke. With all four perhaps being at different weights, the outcome could have been much different had both teams been completely healthy. Especially since two of those weights were forfeited on Wednesday.</p><p>&#8220;I told (Coughlin) coach (Dave) Parsnik, &#8216;If we get everyone in, it&#8217;d be a good match,&#8217;&#8221; Comets coach Darren Testa said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s small steps. We need to be more aggressive. We need to go after points and we didn&#8217;t do that tonight.&#8221;</p><p>The Crusaders started the meet with wins via decision from Jake Cole (182 pounds) and Aaron Warnigiris (195). After they had to forfeit 220 to tie the dual at 6-6, Corey Harrison and Tino Morrow sandwiched pins around a Crestwood forfeit at 106 to open a 24-6 advantage.</p><p>Crestwood received another forfeit at 120, but didn&#8217;t win another weight until the final two as Coughlin went on a roll winning four in a row as Jake Brown (132) and Josh Brown (138) each won by pin.</p><p>&#8220;I thought we wrestled OK for the first match. I wouldn&#8217;t say it was a statement because we have a lot of work to do, but the potential is there,&#8221; Parsnik said.</p><p>The highlight of the dual was at 145 where the Crusaders&#8217; Joey Pahler won a wild overtime bout, 4-2, against Liam Stone.</p><p>The match consisted of five cautions called by referee John Hossage. The final one tied the match at 2-2 late in the third period to force overtime. Stone was awarded the point, but Pahler rebounded to collect the takedown in the sudden victory period for the win.</p><p>&#8220;He kept his composure &#8211; there were a lot of weird calls in that match &#8211; but he kept wrestling, got into the overtime and got the takedown,&#8221; Parsnik said. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad he kept his composure, didn&#8217;t let it get the best of him and kept wrestling.&#8221;</p><p>Ron Grevera, a District 2 Class 3A runner-up last year, earned a fall in 3:11 at 160 for the Comets, while teammate Anthony Kovalchik picked up a pin in 1:18 at 170-pounds to close out the dual. Along with those wins, three of Crestwood&#8217;s losses were by three points or less giving Testa something to look forward to when his team is fully healthy.</p><p>&#8220;The guys are there. We need to have more urgency. They&#8217;re just in slow motion out there right now,&#8221; Testa said.</p><p>The Comets head to Donegal this weekend for a tournament, while the Crusaders will stay close to home and wrestle in the X-Caliber Tournament at Wilkes University on Saturday and Sunday.</p><p><strong>Dallas 42, Pittston Area 21</strong></p><p>Kade Kravits (138), Nick Solinsky (152) and Shawn Henninger (285) all won by fall for the Mountaineers in the Division 1 opener for both teams.</p><p>For the Patriots, Brandon Lopez (106) won by fall with Ryan Lombardo (132), CJ Demark (145) and Keith Romanczuk (120) winning by decision.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Coughlin 48, Crestwood 24</strong></p><p><strong>106 &#8212;</strong> Nino Cinti (COU) won by forfeit; <strong>113 &#8212;</strong> Tino Marrow (COU) pinned Hunter Greenberg, 3:56; <strong>120 &#8212;</strong> Trey Zabroski (CRE) won by forfeit; <strong>126 &#8212;</strong> Jamie Pahler (COU) dec.
