EXETER &#8212; A fierce battle from the previous night followed by a furious flurry from a determined opponent had the Wyoming Area Warriors losing their legs.Cassidy Orzel helped make sure they never lost the lead, nor their season-opening winning streak.Orzel came off the bench to make two pivotal plays in the final six minutes Wednesday as Wyoming Area recovered from a near-collapse to remain unbeaten by holding off hungry Hanover Area, 54-43, in a Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball game at Wyoming Area Secondary Center.&#8220;Everybody really supports me,&#8221; said Orzel, a sophomore who finished with eight points, &#8220;and I like how I just come off the bench and can change the game with my energy.&#8221;The 9-0 Warriors needed it dearly.After fighting fiercely for a 62-57 fourth-quarter win over Wallenpaupack on Tuesday, Wyoming Area stormed out to a 14-4 first-quarter lead over Hanover Area behind Sarah Holweg&#8217;s first seven points.Nicole Silinskie hit a pair of 3-point field goals in the second quarter, and Holweg scored five more points as the Warriors walked into halftime holding an 11-point advantage.Then some fatigue started to set in.&#8220;At Wallenpaupack, it was certainly a huge win for us,&#8221; Wyoming Area coach Chad Lojewski said. &#8220;And not even 24 hours later, we were playing a tough, physical team. This is a game they could have easily stolen from us.&#8221;The Hawkeyes tried.Genesis Rodriguez pulled down a whopping 17 rebounds while scoring 14 points, and Hanover Area&#8217;s Victoria Benning owned the third quarter. She scored 13 of her 21 points while rallying the Hawkeyes, and used a free throw to cut Wyoming Area&#8217;s lead to seven points.With 1:40 to play in the third quarter, Benning buried a 17-foot jumper to pull Hanover Area within 34-31. And her late layup had the Hawkeyes within five points entering the final frame.When Sara Whitesell scored off an inside move early in the fourth, Hanover Area was hanging around in a three-point game.Suddenly, a Hawkeyes team that pulled its starters in the second half of a 37-point loss to Lake-Lehman on Tuesday &#8212; falling to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in league play in the process &#8212; was on the verge of taking down unbeaten Wyoming Area.Not if Orzel could help it.She swooped in for a steal and converted the transition layup, giving Wyoming Area a 43-38 advantage. And less than two minutes later, Orzel showed up again, grabbing a rebound off a missed Warriors foul shot and turning it into a layup that pretty much ended the suspense by restoring Wyoming Area&#8217;s 10-point advantage.&#8220;I knew it was a tight game,&#8221; Orzel said. &#8220;I just knew we had to score, get the energy flowing.&#8221;She&#8217;s one of the young guns contributing heavily to a Warriors team that&#8217;s 4-0 in the WVC&#8217;s Division 2 &#8212; one of four unbeaten teams in league play &#8212; and leads the District 2 Class 4A standings.&#8220;We have a couple sophomores who just have no fear,&#8221; Lojewski said. &#8220;Cassidy&#8217;s certainly one of them. She&#8217;s one of those quiet leaders. It doesn&#8217;t matter who we&#8217;re playing.&#8221;Holweg, who finished with 21 points, kept the Warriors playing from the front all night. She buried four 3-pointers, the last which gave Wyoming Area a six-point lead in the fourth quarter, and hit three foul shots down the stretch to give the Warriors breathing room.Now they can breathe easier, with games against winless GAR and MMI Prep scheduled for Friday and Saturday, clearing a path for the Warriors to end this week and enter next with a perfect mark.Right?&#8221;There are no easy games,&#8221; Lojewski cautioned. &#8220;When you win a game like last (Tuesday) night and come back 24 hours later, to be 9-0 is fantastic. (But) our focus right now is GAR. We&#8217;re going to play them (Friday) at GAR. We&#8217;ve got to keep our mental focus.&#8221;Lake-Lehman 64, MMI Prep 12Corinna Scoblick scored 15 points and Sarah Salus added nine as Lake-Lehman defeated visiting MMI Prep and remained tied at the top of the WVC Division 2 at 5-0.The Black Knights had 10 players figure in the scoring.Nanticoke Area 54, Meyers 29The Trojanettes shook off a slow start with a 27-point second quarter on their way to defeating Meyers.Lisa Radziak led Nanticoke Area with 20 points and Bella Czeck added 11.Allycia Harris paced Meyers with seven.Berwick 67, GAR 20Reese Mensinger scored 24 points to pace Berwick.
