WBS Pens persevere for 4-3 overtime win against Binghamton

<p>KINGSTON &#8211; In eight seasons as head coach of Wyoming Seminary, Scott Green and his teams had never lost a home dual meet.</p><p>Green and the Blue Knights have beaten national champs, No.1-ranked teams, state champions and many others en route to a very impressive streak.</p><p>On Saturday, Green ran that stretch to 50 consecutive wins at the Carpenter Athletic Complex.</p><p>It was No. 51 that got away.</p><p>After defeating Montini Catholic (No. 3 in the country) and St. Ed&#8217;s (No. 8) earlier in the day, Sem &#8211; the fourth-ranked team in the nation &#8211; fell to top-ranked Bergen Catholic 40-15 to conclude the inaugural MyHouse Melee.</p><p>&#8220;We threw a stinker out there in the end,&#8221; Green said. &#8220;When you&#8217;re wrestling this level, you gotta be on all the time. Three matches against top 10 teams in one day is tough, but they were doing the same thing, so no excuses. We&#8217;re happy with the two matches that we won, but we&#8217;re extraordinarily disappointed that we didn&#8217;t finish.&#8221;</p><p>On the adjacent mat during the dual between Sem and Bergen, the highly ranked girls wrestling team at Wyoming Seminary was dominating Team Canada.</p><p>The Sem girls won nine of the 10 matches &#8212; winning all the bouts by either pin or technical fall.</p><p>&#8220;They wrestled very hard, very intense and very aggressive,&#8221; Blue Knights girls coach Erin Vandiver said. &#8220;I&#8217;m very proud of them for doing that. I wanted them to come out, wrestle hard and see where the points may fall. They just go in our favor because our girls are working hard.&#8221;</p><p>The top competition didn&#8217;t disappoint the fans and aficionados who made the trek to Kingston. Before Bergen defeated Sem, the Crusaders fell to Montini 30-23. That score occurred after the Blue Knights defeated Montini 32-30 and took care of St. Ed&#8217;s 45-16.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very exciting to have all that talent all in one gym,&#8221; Vandiver said. &#8220;It&#8217;s pretty cool. It doesn&#8217;t happen a lot so we were excited to host an event like this.&#8221;</p><p>In the boys main event, the Crusaders won the first four matches to stake a 15-0 lead. Heavyweight John High energized his team with a 20-second pin to get the action started. The next three matches were all close and could have gone either way, but Bergen wrestlers staved off late attempts to hold on for wins. Nick Kayal defeated Tim Levine by three points at 106 before Enrique Sanchez topped Nic Botello by one point in the 113-pound match. Then Robert Howard defeated Zeke Escelara on a five-point move with 16 seconds left to win 14-10.</p><p>Sem&#8217;s Beau Bartlett won by fall at 126 to get the team on the board at 15-6. But a takedown with nine seconds left in the 132-pound bout gave Carmen Ferrante a 3-1 win over Jack Davis.</p><p>Carson Manville then won by decision for the Blue Knights at 138 to trim the deficit to 18-9, but BC won the next six bouts to pull away.</p><p>The only other match Sem won was when 220-pounder Austin Cooley won by default when his opponent couldn&#8217;t finish due to injury in the last match of the afternoon.</p><p>The Blue Knights have less than three weeks remaining before the individual postseason starts with the Pennsylvania State Prep Tournament on Feb. 16-17 at Malvern Prep.</p><p>&#8220;That type of performance from top to bottom is unacceptable for this program,&#8221; Green added. &#8220;We&#8217;re not gonna sit back and make excuses or say we didn&#8217;t get any breaks, because we got outperformed. We gotta get back in the room on Monday and start working hard.&#8221;</p><p>Up next for Sem&#8217;s girls team, which got pins from Vayle Baker, Amanda Walker and Cheyenne Sisenstein, is a trip to Austria this week for a nine-day international cadet tournament. After that, the team will train until March, including a workout period with four international teams making the trip to the campus.</p><p>At the end of March the girls will travel to events in Oklahoma City, Montreal and Pittsburgh for three events all in the same weekend. The first-year program and the first all-female high school wrestling team in Pennsylvania is hitting its stride at the right time.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re honored to be here and pleased with our experience,&#8221; Vandiver noted. &#8220;Everything that we are trying to do for these women has cultivated in this culture here. The tradition, the structure, the exposure, the global experience, everything we have.
