Shapiro announces $8M in restitution for consumers and agencies

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Whiskers World houses some 200 cats daily and rescues, neuters, and releases hundreds more a month.</p><p>At a Saturday fundraiser at the Mary Stegmaier Mansion on South Franklin Street, the nonprofit was seeking help to take care of even more local felines &#8212; and the occasional dog &#8212; and was looking for anyone willing to donate 3 to 5 acres of land or a building so the group could establish a permanent cat sanctuary.</p><p>Many of the rescues, especially kittens and friendlier ferals, go to live in foster homes to await adoption. But having a central location to keep the cats would allow Whiskers World to service many more animals.</p><p>Co-founders of Whiskers World, Brenda Buckler and Donna Fountain, organized the event &#8212; cleverly titled &#8220;Meows at the Mansion.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;What don&#8217;t we do?&#8221; Buckler said about her comprehensive organization. &#8220;It&#8217;s actually not just for cats, either. We just rescued a dog the other day. Any animal in distress, we don&#8217;t leave behind. We go out and behind shopping centers, behind parks, we go and we trap, neuter, or spay so they don&#8217;t reproduce while they&#8217;re out there, because this area is so overwhelmed with cats.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Plus, we take in homeless animals, try to re-home them. Unwanted animals, abused animals, and try to find them homes or get them into foster homes. We have people that help us with the fostering. Eventually, we want to get a place, a sanctuary, where these animals could live,&#8221; added Fountain.</p><p>&#8220;Instead of putting them back in the parks or by the shopping centers, we want a home for these cats to live. Nobody wants them around, but nobody wants to provide a piece of land that we could put barns in and a facility so they would be out of everybody&#8217;s way,&#8221; she continued.</p><p>&#8220;Basically, we do everything. We go in houses that are deplorable that no one else in the valley would go in and we rescue the cats,&#8221; Buckler stated. &#8220;We need Hazmat suits. No one else will do it. We want to take all of these unwanted animals and give them a forever home. Our dream is to have a sanctuary. That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re working toward now.&#8221;</p><p>Fountain added: &#8220;We actually rescued a cat the other night that was at the dumpster by the Times Leader building. She was so frostbitten that her ears fell off. She needs a tail amputation this week. She had a collar on. She has a good home now.&#8221;</p><p>The next fundraiser for Whiskers World, Pizza for Paws, will be held at Rodano&#8217;s on Public Square. Tickets are $20 and available at The Flower Warehouse in Forty Fort or $25 at the door.
