DIY Network star and ‘tiny house’ draws crowd to annual Home and Living Show

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; The organizers of the spaghetti dinner at the Kingston VFW on Sunday know all the numbers too well.</p><p>One in 15 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer. Sixty percent of those diagnosed have never smoked or quit the habit yet are still beset by the disease.</p><p>Allan Makowski became one of those statistics when he succumbed to lung cancer nine years ago. His death inspired his wife, Pauline Makowski, to form Breathe Deep NEPA, the local chapter of cancer research and awareness group Lungevity.</p><p>The spaghetti dinner was a fundraiser held by Breathe Deep.</p><p>&#8220;Lungevity is a national organization,&#8221; Makowski said. &#8220;Breathe Deep events are all over the country. They&#8217;re grass roots events to raise money for lung cancer research and therapies.</p><p>&#8220;Lung cancer is the foremost cancer killer in the country, above all other cancers. You don&#8217;t have to be a smoker. We just need to find a cure for lung cancer. All of the money (that Lungevity) makes goes toward research projects. They have doctors researching at different hospitals all over the country.&#8221;</p><p>Breathe Deep also holds a 5K run and walk in June at Kirby Park, which is the group&#8217;s biggest fundraiser. But, according to Makowski, Sunday&#8217;s event was meant to reach a new group of people.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re a small committee, the auxiliary from the VFW puts the spaghetti dinner together, and we pay per plate, and whatever our profit is goes to Lungevity. The whole idea for the spaghetti dinner started with people who want to help, but they may not necessarily be able to walk or run.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;So it&#8217;s kind of reaching out to a different demographic.&#8221;</p><p>The dinner included homemade pasta and meatballs. There was also a selection of raffle baskets for attendees to take chances on.</p><p>Sam Greenberg, a World War II veteran and board member of the local committee, also has ties to Allan Makowski.</p><p>&#8220;Lung cancer took one of my dearest friends, Alan Makowski,&#8221; said Greenberg. &#8220;But his family and friends of his have undertaken it to sponsor Lungevity. This is one way of sponsoring money that we raise for the national organization. The name speaks for itself, a long life which lungs are involved.</p><p>&#8220;We have it every year, and its working.&#8221;</p><p>The group&#8217;s 5K run will be June 24.
