The West Chester women&#8217;s basketball team has won 10 straight games and stands 15-4 overall and 12-3 in PSAC East play. A key performer for the Golden Rams is senior Mia Hopkins.The 5-foot-11 forward, a Pittston Area grad, is second on the team in scoring with a 14.8 average and leads the squad in rebounding with 8.0 per game. She&#8217;s also second in assists with 69, has 31 steals and a team-high 18 blocked shots. And, she&#8217;s hit 16 of 49 3-point attempts.&#8220;Mia has been instrumental to the success of our program this year,&#8221; coach Kiera Wooden said. &#8220;Whatever we need her to do for the team to be successful, she does, including playing out of position.&#8221;The coach likes the fact that Hopkins never takes plays off.&#8220;Mia brings a level of intensity and competitiveness to each possession both in practice and in games,&#8221; Wooden said. &#8220;She&#8217;s second to none in rebounding due to her leaping ability and her nose for the ball.&#8221;Hopkins is also hard to guard according to the coach.&#8220;She can handle, catch and shoot and create shots off the dribble for herself and her teammates,&#8221; Wooden said. &#8220;I&#8217;m most impressed with her passing ability and the fact that she&#8217;s second on the team in assists goes to show how unselfish she plays.&#8221;Hopkins was named PSAC East Co-Player of the Week on Monday after scoring 10 points with 11 rebounds in a 78-68 victory over Pitt-Johnstown on Jan. 24 and 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 78-60 triumph over Bloomsburg on Saturday. A Bloomsburg transfer, Hopkins had 16 points in a 74-63 triumph over her former team during the winning streak on Jan. 8.New event for GillGrad student Cassandra Gill ranks as one of the top distance runners in Iona women&#8217;s track history. But this winter, the Holy Redeemer grad is trying something new &#8212; the shot put.She opened the indoor season by finishing 13th at the Fordham Opener on Dec. 1 in New York with a toss of 19 feet, 6 inches. On Jan. 12, she was 10th (17 feet, 11 &#189; inches) in Fordham&#8217;s Mike Massone Invite, also in New York.Gill, also a standout in cross country, won the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships last spring.Shedlock at her bestSlippery Rock freshman Vanessa Shedlock captured the triple jump at last Saturday&#8217;s Al Hall Freedom Games in Edinboro. The Wyoming Area grad hit 37 feet, 5 &#188; inches which is a personal best and ranks sixth on the PSAC performance list.She also finished fourth in the 60-meter dash in 8.27 seconds. Shedlock is listed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.24, which she recorded when she finished eighth at the Youngstown Icebreaker on Dec. 1 in Youngstown, Ohio.A debut for DeLucaCornell senior Dominic DeLuca, fresh from a solid season with the Big Red cross country team last fall, made his debut with the indoor track team at Cornell&#8217;s Upstate Challenge on Jan. 20 in Ithaca, N.Y. The Dallas grad finished sixth in the 1,000-meter run (2:29.07) and was a member of the distance medley relay, which finished second (10:32.09).DeLuca finished 15th in the Ivy League cross country championships (5-mile time of 25:29.4) and 10th in the Northeast Regionals (10k time of 31:13.0).Gearinger starts fastJunior Dylan Gearinger, a Berwick grad, made his debut with the Haverford men&#8217;s indoor track team at the Seamus McElligott Invitational on Saturday in Haverford, and he captured the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:21.73.That was a personal best and the best mark in the Centennial Conference thus far this season. And, it is the best time in Division III this winter. Gearinger captured the 3,000 with a time of 8:31.84 at last year&#8217;s Centennial Indoor Championship.Good start for DissingerShippensburg senior Bryanna Dissinger kicked off her indoor track season by finishing fifth in the 5,000-meter run at the 20th annual Bison Open last Friday in Lewisburg. Her time was 18:11.26 and her adjusted time of 18:02.91 ranks fourth on the PSAC performance list.The Dallas grad finished sixth in the 5k (17:53.46) and was 12th in the 3k (109:42.14) at the PSAC Indoor Championships last season as a junior.Washington finding rangeJunior Darius Washington is having a solid season with the 10-9 Eastern men&#8217;s basketball team, but the 6-foot-1 guard has really been hot from outside the arc in the Eagles last seven contests.The Holy Redeemer grad has hit 25 of 56 3-point attempts (.444) to improve his overall record of 52 for 126 (.413). He&#8217;s scored in double figures in all seven games with a season-high 22 points in an 80-76 victory over FDU-Florham on Jan. 17 in St. Davids.Marchetti moving upWaynesburg senior middle distance runner Angie Marchetti moved into the top five in two events in the Presidents&#8217; Athletic Conference indoor performance list after competing against a number of Division I and II athletes at the Youngstown State College Invite on Jan. 19.The Hazleton Area grad is third on the PAC list in the 800-meter run after finishing 34th at Youngstown (2:29.29) and she&#8217;s fourth on the list in the mile after finishing 29th (5:36.23).Johns has a good shotFreshman Emily Johns is the top shot put performer on the Harvard women&#8217;s indoor track team. The Lake-Lehman grad finished fifth at last Sunday&#8217;s H-Y-P (Harvard, Yale and Penn) meet in Cambridge, Mass. She hit a personal record 39 feet, 3 inches and that stands 17th on the Ivy League performance list.Johns also is 18th in the weight throw after a 44 foot, 2 &#189; inch toss that was good for 14th place at the BU Season Opener on Dec. 2 in Boston.Sadvary goes the distanceLafayette junior David Sadvary is competing in distance races with the Leopards&#8217; indoor track team. The Coughlin grad finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run at Lehigh&#8217;s John Covert Classic on Saturday in Bethlehem with a time of 9:13.15.He was fourth (9:13.01) in a dual meet loss to rival Lehigh on Jan. 20. Sadvary also runs the leadoff leg on the 4x800 relay, which stands fifth on the Patriot League performance list with an adjusted time of 8:27.17.<style>
