WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The game was insignificant as far as the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys basketball race. Nanticoke Area locked up the crown last Friday.However, if either Berwick or Meyers wanted to make the eight-team District 2 Class 4A field, then the winner would have an upper hand Tuesday night. Meyers was that team &#8230; barely.The Mohawks rallied in the final two minutes to edge Berwick 51-47, sending the Dawgs to yet another heartbreaking loss.Freshman forward Blake Masker put Meyers ahead for good, 47-45, with an underhand scoop underneath the basket and ensuing free throw with 1:41 to play. At times, Masker was on the court with two other freshmen.&#8220;I can&#8217;t be happier with the physical effort that these kids gave,&#8221; said Meyers coach Pat Toole, whose team entered the game a loser in five of its last seven games. &#8220;We have freshmen out here playing against seniors. I thought the kids stepped up. There were some freshmen moments, but we&#8217;re going to have to take those.&#8220;But I&#8216;m super proud of these kids to give a shot to get into the playoffs.&#8220;Meyers (9-7 Div. 2, 10-11) came into Tuesday&#8217;s game clinging to the D2-4A eighth spot with Berwick (6-10, 9-12) in ninth. GAR (8-8, 10-11), the only other team with a realistic shot, was 10th. Since all games and the winning percentages of opponents figure into the power rating system, it was impossible to decipher the district standings immediately.All three, though, received a big boost when seventh-place Honesdale lost to first-place Scranton Prep to finish its season.Berwick lost for the seventh consecutive time. Included in the skid was a third overtime loss of the season.&#8220;We had to win one of these next two,&#8221; Berwick coach Jason Kingery said. &#8220;Now you have to go to Tunkhannock, which is a good drive and probably not the best place to try to find a win. We haven&#8217;t won a game in three weeks. Do we really deserve to go (to the playoffs)?&#8221;Berwick overcame shooting and rebounding issues in the first quarter to take a 26-24 lead into halftime. The Dawgs lost the advantage in the third quarter, but managed to regain it twice in the fourth. The last time came with 2:31 to play on a pair of free throws by Damon Beckhorn, who finished with 16 points.But after Masker&#8217;s three-point play, Najese Hood hit two free throws and Keegan Brewster added another for a 50-45 lead with 21 seconds left. Berwick&#8217;s Alec Markle, who finished with 18 points, hit a drive to the basket with 12.9 seconds left, but after a free throw by Meyers&#8217; Kendall Brewster the Dawgs&#8217; final shot was a desperation 3-point heave at the buzzer while down by four.Kendall Brewster paced the Mohawks with 16 points. The inside trio of Masker, Hood and David Kasper combined for 23.NOTE: Meyers concludes its season Thursday when it hosts GAR at Coughlin High School. Berwick finishes at Tunkhannock, also Thursday.Hanover Area 70, MMI Prep 40Three Hawkeyes finished in double figures as Hanover Area defeated MMI Prep.Desmond Cannon led the way with 16 points followed by Mike Piscotty with 15 and Asad Whitehead with 12.Matt Marchetti had 13 and George Palermo scored 11 to pace MMI.Wyo. Seminary 50, Lake-Lehman 26Dimitri Gnall scored a game-high 14 points and the Blue Knights overpowered Lehman.Gnall scored the first 10 of his points in the first half, helping Sem to a 23-11 lead at intermission.Jake Koretz added 11 points in the victory.
