The Wilkes men&#8217;s basketball team has the top seed in next week&#8217;s Freedom Conference tournament. The Colonels reward? Facing the reigning league champs in the first round.With the regular season ending on Saturday, Wilkes finished atop the league standings with Misericordia in fourth place after the Colonels lost 69-66 to Eastern and the Cougars beat Manhattanville 83-71.Now the cross-county rivals will meet in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Marts Center. Wilkes swept the regular season series, winning 87-82 on the road in January and 86-72 a week ago in Wilkes-Barre. Misericordia won last year&#8217;s Freedom title to reach the NCAA tournament.The Colonels (18-7, 11-3) had already wrapped up the No. 1 seed earlier in the week, so while the loss to Eastern didn&#8217;t affect their standing, it did change who their postseason opponent would be.Eastern, DeSales and Misericordia all entered the final day tied for second place and all three won, dropping the Cougars (15-10, 10-4) to fourth place on tiebreakers. Eastern will host DeSales in Wednesday&#8217;s other men&#8217;s semifinal.In Misericordia&#8217;s win, Jason Kenny scored 14 points to move into fourth place on the school&#8217;s all-time scoring list at 1,488. After being recognized before the game for senior day, Jake Szczecina (18) and Tre Fields (17) led the team in points.The Cougars&#8217; playoff plans were altered, though, because of a buzzer-beater down at Wilkes. Eastern hit a running 3-pointer with two-tenths of a second left to give the Eagles a sweep of the Colonels. Eastern erased what had been a 10-point deficit in the final 6:43.Rob Pecorelli led Wilkes with 22 points off the bench, shooting 8 for 12 from the field and 6 for 8 from behind the arc.FDU-Florham 89, King&#8217;s 87King&#8217;s nearly overcame a 12-point deficit within the final three minutes of play, but senior Connor Callejas&#8217; three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim and the Monarchs would end their season.Callejas led the Monarchs with 23 points and four assists, finishing his college career with 1,295 points. Senior Chris Fazzini had a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 10 minutes left to play.King&#8217;s concluded its season with a 10-15 overall record, going 6-8 in conference play.PSU Wilkes-Barre 67, PSU Greater Allegheny 59Penn State Wilkes-Barre junior Tomir Gibbs scored 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Mountain Lions to the PSUAC championship game.The Mountain Lions take on Penn State Brandywine at 1 p.m. Sunday for the conference championship. The winner advances to the USCAA national tournament.WOMEN&#8217;S BASKETBALLFDU-Florham 75, King&#8217;s 62With the regular season ending on Saturday, King&#8217;s had a chance to end up with the top seed in the Freedom Conference tournament, but the Lady Monarchs ended up with the third seed after a loss to FDU-Florham.This marks King&#8217;s first trip to the playoffs in five years.&#8220;It&#8217;s awesome,&#8221; King&#8217;s coach Caitlin Hadzimichalis said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a good feeling to see that the team bought in to what we are trying to do and to see that immediate success, because that&#8217;s not normal.&#8221;King&#8217;s will meet No. 2 seeed DeSales in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Billera Hall in Center Valley. King&#8217;s split the regular season series with the Bulldogs, winning at home 55-50 in January and losing 61-56 last week on the road.&#8220;We are confident because we did not play well at all when we went down there, and we were able to escape with a five point loss,&#8221; Hadzimichalis said. &#8220;So if we play the way that we know we are capable of playing, we can get after it.&#8221;In King&#8217;s loss, Rebecca Prociak had a double-double, leading all scorers with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Olivia Hoffman also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.King&#8217;s finished the regular season with a 15-10 overall record and a 10-4 mark in conference play.Misericordia 79, Manhattanville 61Misericordia locked up the fourth seed in the Freedom Conference tournament and will travel to take on top seeded FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. in Wednesday&#8217;s semifinals.FDU-Florham swept the Cougars during the regular season. Misericordia lost at home 66-63 in early January and lost 84-61 in Madison, N.J., in late January.In the Cougars&#8217; win, Quintessa Zamolyi scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sixteen of her points came in the third quarter. Paige Wampole had a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds.Misericordia finished the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and a 9-5 Freedom conderence record.Eastern 81, Wilkes 68Wilkes ended its season with a loss to Eastern on senior day. Emily Sofranko, Jamie Campbell, Sarah O&#8217;Hara, Nicole Farrell and Catey McFadden were recognized before the game for their accomplishments with the team.McFadden led the Colonels with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. She went 2-of-5 on three-pointers and finished her collegiate career tied for seventh in school history with 89 threes.Wilkes finished with a 4-21 overall record, going 0-14 in the Freedom Conference.SWIMMINGGolden day for King&#8217;s at MACsFor the first-time ever, King&#8217;s crowned two individual champions on the same day of the MAC Swimming Championships, as sophomores Kirsten Siwy and Rhyce Hammaker won MAC Gold.Rhyce Hammaker won the men&#8217;s 200-breaststroke in a time of 57.67 after setting a new school-record time of 57.48 in the preliminary round.In the women&#8217;s championships, Kirsten Siwy won her second straight MAC championship in the 400-individual medley, dominating the field with a time of 4:40.56 &#8212; nearly four second faster than the event runner-up.Joining Siwy atop the podium was Misericordia&#8217;s Grace Nikolski, who also defended a conference title with a victory in the 100 breast in a time of 1:06.55. The Cougars men were led by Ricky Averill (fifth, 400 IM) and Joe Grzech (fifth, 100 back).Also at the Graham Aquatic Center, Wilkes set three new program records while and Abby Keating earned All-MAC Second Team honors in the women&#8217;s field.Keating broke her own 400 IM program record in the morning prelims when she qualified fourth with a time of 4:49.24. She upped that effort by over three seconds during the night session with a 4:44.85, finishing second in the A Final race, to make the podium and earn All-MAC Second Team honors in the process.On the men&#8217;s side, Justin Burda broke his own program record when he finished 11th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.50. And Jared Byrne bested his own program record in the 200 free during the prelims with a time of 1:46.24 before finishing 11th in the finals.WRESTLINGWilkes 46, Keystone 6Wilkes claimed nine of 10 bouts from Keystone on the second day of the 2018 Cross County Challenge hosted by the University of Scranton.Ashton Gyenizs (165 pounds) won by technical fall while Matthew Grossman (141) won by major decision.Scranton 39, King&#8217;s 6King&#8217;s concluded its dual-meet season with a loss to Scranton. Dakota Quick (125 pounds) picked up a win by decision, as did Jake Taylor (141). King&#8217;s has a 2-22 overall record on the season.WOMEN&#8217;S HOCKEYUtica 6, King&#8217;s 0Utica scored twice in each period and the King&#8217;s College women&#8217;s ice hockey team saw its inaugural season come to an end without a win.Emma Zeveney made 58 saves for King&#8217;s.
