Holweg sets scoring mark, helps Wyoming Area reach girls basketball semis

YATESVILLE &#8211; Dallas began and ended Tuesday night&#8217;s District 2 Class 5A boys basketball quarterfinal playoff rout of Wyoming Valley West with its defense.In between, when the Mountaineers needed a little boost, sixth man Brody Strickland provided it by joining an already balanced scoring attack.Strickland was one of four players to score in double figures as Dallas advanced, 75-39, at Pittston Area High School.Wyoming Valley West whittled a 14-point, second-quarter deficit to six points early in the third quarter.That&#8217;s when Strickland went back to work.&#8220;He does it every time I ask him to do it,&#8221; Dallas coach Mark Belenski said. &#8220; &#8230; He has his role and he does it well.&#8220;Rebound the basketball, play defense and, if he has the shot, make it. He has a great shot.&#8221;Joey Parsons ended a streak of seven straight Dallas misses from 3-point range, then Strickland scored the next four points to start a 14-point streak to a 44-24 lead.The run grew to 23-3 and extended all the way into the fourth quarter.Parsons had eight of his game-high 19 points in the outburst and Strickland had seven of his 10. They hit 3-pointers for the last two baskets of the third quarter and a 52-27 lead.&#8220;What I try to do is come in and give those guys a break,&#8221; said Strickland, who made both of his 3-point attempts. &#8220;At halftime, it was a close game, we were only up by seven. We wanted to put those guys away.&#8221;Jay Bittner and Matt Mathers were the other double figures scorers. Bittner had 15 points and six steals. Mathews had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead a 34-22 advantage on the boards.The Mountaineers, however, made their biggest impact on defense.&#8220;We started with our defense and we finished with our defense,&#8221; Belenski said. &#8220;We had a little lapse there at the end of the second quarter. We got a little funky there, but we went over some things at halftime and picked up our intensity.&#8221;After Wyoming Valley West held the ball for nearly a minute and a half on its first possession, Alex Charlton and Bittner turned consecutive steals into the game&#8217;s first four points.Dallas blocked three of the first five and four of the first nine Wyoming Valley West shots.Parsons had two of his three blocks, a 3-pointer and a dunk where he slammed home a rebound in one motion while going up and over the Spartans to complete an 11-2 start.Wyoming Valley West went with an altered starting lineup, including sitting Draig Ruff, the Wyoming Valley Conference&#8217;s top scorer, for the entire first quarter.Ruff made an impact when the Spartans outscored the Mountaineers, 15-13, in the second quarter. He made all three of his shots while adding three assists, two steals and two defensive rebounds.Ruff finished with 14 points and Mason Mendygral added 12.Dallas advances to play Crestwood in Friday&#8217;s semifinals with a spot in the championship game at the Mohegan Sun Arena and a berth in the state playoffs on the line.&#8220;That&#8217;s where we got stopped last year,&#8221; Belenski said.Wyoming Seminary 51, Lakeland 22Dimitri Gnall scored 23 points as top-seeded Wyoming Seminary opened the D2-3A playoffs with a victory over eighth-seeded Lakeland.Nick Ganter added eight for the Blue Knights (19-4), who will play fourth-seeded Dunmore (14-9) in the semifinals on Friday at a site and time to be announced. Dunmore defeated Carbondale 62-49.Lakeland finished its season at 6-17.Holy Redeemer 64, Montrose 49Collin Cook scored 24 points as second-seeded Holy Redeemer defeated seventh-seeded Montrose in a D2-3A semifinal game.Redeemer (17-6) will play No. 6 Riverside (10-13) in the semifinals on Friday at a site and time to be announced. Riverside upset No. 3 Mid Valley 46-29.Joey Judge and J.D. Turosky added 12 each for the Royals, who led 29-26 at halftime but were able to pull away by outscoring Montrose 24-10 in the third quarter. Montrose ended its season at 13-10.Crestwood 48, Pittston Area 45Crestwood held off Pittston Area to advance to the D2-5A semifinals.
