BYU’s loss lets Big Ten bubble teams breathe easy — for now

Storm-related closings/postponements

<p>For the second time in less than a week, a storm rolled into the Northeast with wet, heavy snow Wednesday, grounding flights, closing schools and bringing another round of power outages to a corner of the country still recovering from the previous blast of winter.</p><p>And yet, again, Northeastern Pennsylvania fared relatively well amid the chaos.</p><p>In part, that was because schools, businesses, libraries and even bus services were among the organizations that decided to close in advance of Tuesday night&#8217;s forecast of heavy snowfalls under what was called Winter Storm Quinn. A state of emergency declared on Tuesday by Gov. Tom Wolf helped keep many home.</p><p>Some estimates had called for up t0 12 inches of snow, even more. In the end, Luzerne County and its environs got off relatively easy.</p><p>Around Wilkes-Barre, a light dusting turned roofs and lawns white, but many streets got little more than wet throughout the day. Farther south and east, it was a different story.</p><p>According to WNEP, Mountain Top received 6 inches, Hazleton 4, Lehighton 9 and Stroudsburg 8.</p><p>In many parts of the state &#8212; including the Poconos &#8212; as well as in neighboring states, the day only brought more misery to residents, many of whom were still without power after last Friday&#8217;s storm.</p><p>Wednesday&#8217;s nor&#8217;easter knocked out electricity to hundreds of thousands of customers and produced &#8220;thundersnow&#8221; as it made its way up the coast, with flashes of lightning and booming thunder from the Philadelphia area to New York City. A New Jersey middle school teacher was struck by lightning but survived.</p><p>Overall, the storm unloaded snow at a rate of 2 or 3 inches an hour, with some places in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut getting well over a foot by Wednesday night. Butler, New Jersey, got 22 inches, Sloatsburg, New York, 23 inches and Newtown, Connecticut, 14 inches.</p><p>Major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor saw much less. Philadelphia International Airport recorded about 6 inches and New York City received a little over 2.</p><p>More than 2,600 flights across the region &#8212; about 1,900 in the New York metro area alone &#8212; were canceled.</p><p>It wasn&#8217;t much better on the ground, with Pennsylvania and New York banning big rigs from some major highways and transit agencies reducing or canceling service on trains and buses.</p><p>The Luzerne County Transportation Authority and Martz Trailways were among those bus systems that simply shut down on Wednesday.</p><p>Amtrak canceled some train service, and commuter trains in Philadelphia and New Jersey were put on an abbreviated schedule.</p><p>The National Weather Service says there is a 30 percent chance of snow showers around Wilkes-Barre today, with a predicted high of 38 degrees.</p><p><em>The Associated Press contributed to this report.</em></p><style>
