Pot legalization no free ride to smoke on campus

First Posted: 11/23/2012 HARVEYS LAKE &amp;#8211; Once again the possible move and renovation of the borough police department was a topic of contention Tuesday night at borough council's regular meeting.
Resident Danny Blaine brought up the topic during the public comment time, when he presented council a letter from absent resident Ed Williams. The letter was in regards to the homeowners of Marina Point. Blaine read part of the letter aloud, stating the residents of Marina Pointe were against moving the police station to Little League Road.
It doesn't seem logical to me, and I disagree 100 percent, said Blaine.
Guy Giordano said he saw the estimates for the renovation of the current station the borough received last week, and he thought they were wrong.
Judi Williams Spagnuolo then asked council about the floor plans that were available on the back table for public inspection. The floor plans were for the renovation of the recreation center on Little League Road. Spagnuolo checked with council to be sure the original bids for both buildings had come in for more than the allotted grant money. She questioned the cost and whether that would result in a tax increase.
As a taxpayer, I can't afford to pay, said Spagnuolo.
This sparked debate in the meeting room. Council President Larry Radel defended the proposed moving of the police station, while council members Michell'e Boice and Thomas Kehler tried to explain the estimates for the current station were exaggerated and included an addition that was unnecessary.
Radel defended the addition in the estimates saying the engineers were simply trying to make the square footage of the buildings the same for comparison purposes.
Kehler added that if the addition were taken from the estimates of the current station, the cost of renovation was about $87,000, about the same as the recreation center.
Council member Amy Williams reported the borough is preparing to send certified letters to all residents that have more than $500 in unpaid garbage fees, and that the borough is short almost $80,000 in garbage fees.
 We won't have to raise taxes if we can get people to pay their fair share, council member Ed Kelly said.
In other business, the 2013 preliminary budget was made available and is at the borough office for anyone who wishes to inspect it.
