Surgeon general urges Americans to carry overdose antidote

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Giving up their right to remain silent may come back to haunt Robert Rodriguez and Isaiah Jennings, accused of fatally shooting Trevor Oliver and injuring Ingrid Vanessa Batista nearly two months ago.</p><p>City police Det. Matt Stash testified during the duo&#8217;s preliminary hearing Thursday that Rodriguez, 23, and Jennings, 19, admitted to being inside 77 Hutson St., Wilkes-Barre, where Oliver, 41, and Batista, 39, were shot Feb. 7. Oliver died five days later on Feb. 12.</p><p>The case against both suspects was sent to county court after more than two hours of testimony in district court.</p><p>Rodriguez, of West Shawnee Avenue, Plymouth, allegedly told Stash he was meeting Oliver to do a drug transaction when he was shot. Rodriguez suffered a gunshot wound to leg, Stash said.</p><p>Jennings, of Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre, reportedly provided more details to detectives, claiming Rodriguez was armed with .357 caliber and .22 caliber handguns when they entered the house. Jennings allegedly told Stash he walked in the house behind Rodriguez, who first shot Batista and &#8220;tussled&#8221; with Oliver.</p><p>Stash testified that Jennings told him while Rodriguez was fighting with Oliver, Rodriguez yelled to Jennings to &#8220;shoot Trevor&#8221; but instead shot Rodriguez in the leg.</p><p>Upon questioning by Jennings&#8217; attorney, Mark Hinrichs, Stash said there was no physical evidence that places Jennings inside the house except for his statements to detectives after his arrest Feb. 13.</p><p>Stash said Jennings was interviewed twice. The detective further stated there was only a small amount of marijuana inside the house and there were no firearms found.</p><p><strong>Recognized &#8216;Rob&#8217;</strong></p><p>Jennings reportedly told Stash that Rodriguez planned to rob Oliver. Jennings claimed he was picked up on North Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, by Rodriguez and two females in a car. They drove to Dana Street where they parked the car, and Rodriguez and Jennings walked to the Hutson Street residence.</p><p>Stash told Rodriguez&#8217;s attorney, William Watt, two projectiles were recovered from an interior wall and no shell casings were found. Stash said the type and caliber of the projectiles remain unknown as testing continues.</p><p>Batista, who survived gunshot wounds to the head, chest and wrists, told detectives she was getting ready to leave the house to pick up a pizza when there was a knock on the door. When she opened it, Stash testified, Batista recognized &#8220;Rob&#8221; because Oliver had worked with him.</p><p>Batista allegedly told detectives there was another man behind Rodriguez as he entered the house. She claimed she sat on the couch to put shoes on when &#8220;Rob&#8221; shot her.</p><p>Batista played dead and heard more gunshots before &#8220;Rob&#8221; ran out of the house.</p><p>Officer Shawn Yelland testified he was the first officer on scene and found a bloody Batista on the kitchen floor inside 67 Hutson St., where she ran for help. Yelland said Batista told him &#8220;Rob&#8221; shot her and Oliver inside 77 Hutson St.</p><p>Rodriguez was arrested during a traffic stop on West End Road in Hanover Township on Feb. 12. Stash said he was armed with a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun when he was captured.</p><p>District Judge Richard Cronauer sent charges of criminal homicide, attempt to commit criminal homicide and conspiracy against Rodriguez and Jennings to Luzerne County Court.</p><p>In an unrelated preliminary hearing involving Rodriguez, Cronauer forwarded two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of simple assault and reckless endangerment to county court.</p><p>That case involves Rodriguez allegedly shooting Lamont Garcia in the abdomen outside a barbershop on Parrish Street, Wilkes-Barre, on Feb. 2.</p><p>Rodriguez blamed Garcia for giving him a bad tattoo on his wrist, police say. Rodriguez believed the tattoo was botched and infected, city police Det. Charles Casey testified.</p><p>Rodriguez and Jennings remain jailed at the county lockup without bail.</p><style>
