Attempted homicide suspect seeks new trial or lower sentence

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; It was the first big car show of the season &#8212; even if Mother Nature can&#8217;t decide exactly what season that is.</p><p>For the 12th straight year, Wilkes University&#8217;s branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, or ASME, held its annual car show in the parking lot behind the university&#8217;s Henry Student Center.</p><p>Steven Lee, a senior mechanical engineering major who is also the group&#8217;s president, said that the show had a bit of something for everything.</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s food, there&#8217;s music,&#8221; Lee said. &#8220;And it&#8217;s all student-run.&#8221;</p><p>And that&#8217;s not even to mention the cars.</p><p>Lee said there were about 50 vehicles for car enthusiasts to check out, ranging from older models to the latest muscle cars. Cars were judged in a variety of categories, and winners were given trophies made out of repurposed car parts.</p><p>However, Lee did say that Sunday&#8217;s sudden dip in temperatures did take a toll on the turnout for the show.</p><p>&#8220;We normally have almost 200 cars,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The weather seems to be keeping people home.&#8221;</p><p>But that didn&#8217;t stop the ASME from having a sizable donation to make.</p><p>Lee said that, each year, members of the club vote to donate proceeds from vehicle registration and other sources to a different charitable organization.</p><p>This year, the ASME decided to put its funds toward the American Cancer Society. While the count wasn&#8217;t final about midway through the day, Lee said the donation would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500.</p><p>Jerry Thomas was one of the drivers whose registration fee went toward that donation.</p><p>The Plymouth man, who was driving a 2008 Mustang Bullet, said he&#8217;s been going to car shows for at least 40 years, and that Sunday&#8217;s cold didn&#8217;t put a chill on the fun.</p><p>&#8220;We went into the cafeteria (of the student center) to warm up, so we had a good time,&#8221; Thomas said.</p><p>Thomas said he always enjoys coming to the show, saying it&#8217;s the first big one of the year.</p><style>
