Their view: Too many of America’s smartest waste their talents

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; The Luzerne County Transportation Authority will be offering free rides Thursday on all fixed-route buses in recognition of <a href="http://www.apta.com/members/memberprogramsandservices/advocacyandoutreachtools/dumpthepump/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank">National &#8220;Dump the Pump Day.&#8221;</a></p><p>Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the annual event encourages people to ride public transit instead of driving a car. It was started in June 2006, when gas prices first hit $3 per gallon &#8212; a benchmark many Pennsylvania stations are again hovering around. Individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,160 annually by downsizing to one car, according to APTA.</p><p>In Luzerne County, Thursday&#8217;s event also will feature community leaders who will be riding the bus routes to show their support for public transit.</p><p>One of them will be Wilkes-Barre City Council President and local historian Tony Brooks, who will discuss historical, recreational and other opportunities within walking distance of the James F. Conahan Intermodal Center.</p><p>There also will be prize giveaways at the intermodal center.</p><style>
