D16 Little League: Plains powers to victory over South Wilkes-Barre

<p>DALLAS &#8212; Ten years ago, Ivy Fox accidentally purchased a canoe at the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction.</p><p>The 17-year-old learned a valuable lesson that year: Do not wave the bidder number around unless you intend to buy.</p><p>The 72nd annual auction kicked off Thursday and promises to inspire new memories for Fox as well as thousands of auction-goers.</p><p>&#8220;We still have (the canoe),&#8221; Fox said, noting she was with her grandparents Mark and Diane Mettler that fateful year.</p><p>The auction located behind the library, at 96 Huntsville Road in Dallas, will open at 5 every night through Sunday.</p><p>Bidding begins at 6:30 each night.</p><p>A shuttle service provided by G. Davis Bus Company will transport attendees from Thomas&#8217; Family Market in the Country Club Shopping Center off Route 309 in Dallas Township to the library starting at 4 p.m.</p><p>Harveys Lake resident John Lamoreaux, his wife Jenn as well as six family and friends plan to stand out from the bidding crowds by wearing bright pink flamingo hats.</p><p>&#8220;I want to try to get in Sue Hand&#8217;s painting,&#8221; Lamoreaux said. &#8220;Then I&#8217;ll bid on it.&#8221;</p><p>Local artist Sue Hand and her two students &#8212; Caroline Stallard, a freshman, and Sarah Gurzynski, a sophomore, both from Dallas High School &#8212; as well as Michael Hiscox, an art teacher at Wycallis Elementary School and at Sue Hand Imagery, will paint different auction scenes during the event.</p><p>The paintings are slated to hit the auction block Sunday.</p><p>This year, Hand&#8217;s painting theme focuses on area history and will feature a book by D.A. Waters.</p><p>&#8220;It was one of the first written about Dallas history,&#8221; said Hand.</p><p>The auction will also feature staples such as the Odds and Ends, the Toy, Book, Jewelry and the Plant tents.</p><p>And a variety of food vendors will be serving up good eats, such as Cibo&#8217;s Food Truck, Yogi&#8217;s Potato Pancakes, The Lands at Hillside Farms, Nice&#8217;s Almonds and Country Girl Kettle Corn.</p><p>Diamonds by Kate will sell apple pies, apple pie a la mode, sticky buns and rice pudding.</p><p>Other vendors include Earth and Wears, selling handcrafted pottery, jewelry and other items; Pure Suds, offering a selection of homemade bath soaps, salts and balms; and Wood Shed Outback, a wood crafter.</p><p>Children&#8217;s activities are slated throughout the auction as well:</p><p>&#8226; On Friday, a juggler will perform 6-7 p.m. and P.J. Reptiles puts on a show 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Children&#8217;s Library, accessible through the rear entrance of the auction grounds.</p><p>&#8226; Endless Dream Animals will allow children to meet furry friends from 6-7 p.m. Saturday in the Children&#8217;s Library.</p><p>&#8226; At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, children can read to therapy dogs in the Children&#8217;s Library.</p><p>&#8226; On Sunday, families are invited to learn balloon sculpture from 6-7 p.m. Children can also make a mess at Slime Time from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Children&#8217;s Library.</p><style>
