Lindsey Oremus appears ready to have a great fall with the St. Joseph&#8217;s women&#8217;s cross country team.A Dallas grad and a senior captain, Oremus opened the season by finishing second at the Monmouth Kick-Off Invitational on Sept. 1 in Lincroft, N.J. Her 4,000-meter time (14:29.9) is a personal record.Last Saturday Oremus and the Hawks competed in Penn State&#8217;s Spiked Shoe Invitational. She finished 30th out of 127 in the strong field with a 5,000-meter time of 22.17. That was 37 seconds faster than her performance in the same meet last year. She was named Co-Athlete of the Week by the Atlantic 10 Conference for her effort.&#8220;Lindsey has raced strong and confident from the gun,&#8221; coach Melody O&#8217;Reilly said. &#8220;She had a great summer of training and is mentally ready for a great season.&#8221;Her choice as captain is not a surprise to the coach.&#8220;Selecting Lindsey was a little bit of a &#8216;no brainer&#8217; because her leadership skills can be seen on a daily basis during practice and are always evident when we are at a meet,&#8221; O&#8217;Reilly said. &#8220;She&#8217;s a natural leader and has a good rapport with her teammates.&#8221;St. Joseph&#8217;s finished sixth in the Spiked Shoe meet. The Hawks aren&#8217;t ranked as one of the top 15 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region but finished ahead of No. 7 Pittsburgh, No. 13 American and 14th-ranked Navy. Three of the teams that finished ahead of them were nationally ranked Penn State, Syracuse and Georgetown.Wood a mainstay at BCJunior Brigid Wood has started all five games at midfield for the Boston College field hockey team this season and has played in 44 games with 20 starts in two-plus seasons for the Eagles.Wood, a Coughlin grad, is a solid defender and has also picked up two assists thus far and has a goal and four assists for her career.Seabrook&#8217;s senior yearBrea Seabrook has had a standout career with the St. Francis field hockey team and the 5-foot-4 senior midfielder/attack figures to top her past efforts this season. The GAR grad was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Region second team and earned her second straight Atlantic 10 Conference first team selection last fall.This season she has a goal and an assist for the 2-4 Red Flash and has played in 48 games with 46 starts and has 20 goals and 14 assists for 54 points with five game-winners.Hockenbury out to improveSophomore Dominic Hockenbury had a big freshman season with the 10th ranked Syracuse men&#8217;s cross country team and the Lake-Lehman grad has his sights on bigger things this fall.Hockenbury earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors with a 20th place in the league championships and All-Northeast Region with an 11th place finish in the NCAA East Regional meet. He opened this season by finishing ninth out of 92 runners at the Spiked Shoe Invitational last Saturday in State College with a 5.2 mile time of 26.22.Davis starting in goalSophomore Paige Davis is the keeper for the New Haven women&#8217;s soccer team. The Coughlin grad had 11 saves in last Saturday&#8217;s conference opener.In the early going, Davis has given up five goals and has 19 saves. She played in nine games with eight starts last season as a freshman and had a 3-3-2 record. She was on the field for 775 minutes and gave up 10 goals with 50 saves.Novak earns honorJunior goalkeeper Megan Novak was named Colonial States Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after two solid efforts for the Keystone field hockey team last week.The Crestwood grad had 12 saves in a loss to Wilkes and five in a win over McDaniel.McGuire running wellNick McGuire is hoping to end his career on a high note with the Bloomsburg men&#8217;s cross country team. The 6-foot-2, 145-pound Crestwood grad, opened his senior season by finishing fourth in a meet against Mansfield last Thursday.In his fourth season as a starter, he covered the 4,000-meter course in 13:31. He came back to finish fourth in another dual meet against Mansfield last Saturday with a 7,000-meter time of 23:08.Wesneski&#8217;s a starterRedshirt sophomore LJ Wesneski is starting at tight end for the Albany football team, debuting against major competition against Pitt at Heinz Field on Sept. 1.The 6-foot-2, 277 pound Wyoming Valley West grad is used mainly as a blocker but had three receptions for 45 with a long completion of 23 yards in last week&#8217;s game against Rhode Island.Mullery leading the wayThe Lehigh field hockey team is getting a big effort from freshman midfielder Leah Mullery. The Holy Redeemer grad leads the team with three goals and six points.She had two goals in a 7-3 loss to Villanova on Sept. 2 and had the team&#8217;s first goal in a 2-1 triumph over Ball State last Saturday.Honor for BolerSophomore Payton Boler was named Colonial States Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after a big effort for the Bryn Athyn field hockey team against New England College last Sunday.The Wyoming Valley West grad had two goals and an assist along with a defensive save and tallied the winning goal in overtime to give the Lions a 5-4 victory.<style>
