KINGSTON &#8212; As if the cloud-covered skies and day-long downpours weren&#8217;t dampening enough, the spirits of Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s field hockey team were further deflated when the wet weather washed away a planned short day of school.&#8220;It&#8217;s Founder&#8217;s Day for our school, Sem&#8217;s birthday,&#8221; Blue Knights midfielder Alex Wesneski said. &#8220;We were supposed to go outside and have a picture, a celebration, but we couldn&#8217;t because of the rain. A half-day of school ended up being a full day, we were very disappointed with that.&#8221;Once classes were dismissed, though, Wesneski and the Blue Knights did their best to pick themselves back up.Hannah Maxwell had a hat trick by halftime, Wesneski joined her with three goals Tuesday and Sem swatted away Coughlin 7-1 at Klassner Field to extend the Blue Knights&#8217; Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 winning streak to 20 consecutive games over the past two seasons.&#8220;When we attack, it&#8217;s hard to stop all of us,&#8221; Wesneski said.That&#8217;s becoming painfully clear to the rest of the conference, as Sem moved to 6-0 and into sole possession of first place in Division 1 &#8212; just ahead of Wyoming Area (5-0), which was rained out against Hazleton Area on Tuesday.The Blue Knights, who went 14-0 to win the division last season, did it despite a lackluster start and allowing the first goal of the season by starting goalie Mia Magnotta.&#8220;We weren&#8217;t totally pleased with the kids today,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary coach Karen Klassner said. &#8220;I think they know what they have to be doing. You can&#8217;t have any letdowns when you&#8217;re playing a team like Coughlin. We started off slow, but we&#8217;re playing some really good teams coming up. We want to get better every game, we have to pick it up.&#8220;Every game, to us, is big.&#8221;During Tuesday&#8217;s game, the teams were locked in a scoreless battle halfway through the opening half, when Wesneski rocketed a shot into the back of the cage to get Sem on the board at the 14:38 mark.Little more than four minutes later, the outcome was no longer in doubt.Maxwell, the league&#8217;s co-leading goal scorer coming in, sent shots into the cage at the 13:05, 12:23 and 10:29 marks &#8212; the last a diving poke into the cage off a Kelsey Reznak shot that left Sem with a 4-1 halftime lead and gave Maxwell her third hat trick and 14 total goals in six league games.&#8220;We&#8217;re ready to work really well together. I think that&#8217;s a really big advantage we have,&#8221; Wesneski said.Coughlin briefly cut into its deficit when Abby Sorokas scored off a penalty corner in the first half, pulling the Crusaders within 3-1 and registering the only goal Magnotta has allowed nearing the season&#8217;s midway point.&#8220;It&#8217;s the first goal she&#8217;s given up, period,&#8221; Klassner said of Magnotta, explaining why the play disturbed her. &#8220;It&#8217;s how the goal happened. We blocked her out, we kept her from going to the ball. I felt bad for Mia, she&#8217;s played really well.&#8221;So did Wesneski, as the Iowa commit consistently began getting her stick on the ball in the circle.That&#8217;s one of the most frightening sights for Sem&#8217;s opponents, as the hard-shooting junior ripped home two laser-like goals in the second half to finish with a hat trick of her own while giving the Blue Knights a 6-1 advantage to get the clock running under the sportsmanship rule with 8:31 to play.&#8220;It felt good,&#8221; said Wesneski, who boosted her WVC total to 11 goals. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t do it without my teammates getting me the ball. I think I&#8217;ve developed as a player over the years. As I&#8217;ve gotten stronger, my shot has gotten harder.&#8221;Her shots weren&#8217;t the only things making Sem smile.Wesneski also added two assists to finish her banner day, while Reznak dished out four assists before adding the game&#8217;s final goal.So Sem&#8217;s field hockey players had something to celebrate after all.&#8220;I don&#8217;t think we could have asked for a better start to our season,&#8221; said Wesneski, a key part of the Blue Knight&#8217;s 2017 team that won the District 2 Class A championship and finished as state runner-up. &#8220;Especially in the WVC, (where) you have no idea what can happen.&#8221;Berwick 2, Nanticoke Area 1Peyton Lipsey scored Berwick&#8217;s second goal of the first half, lifting the Bulldogs to victory.Kaylee Houser&#8217;s unassisted goal gave Berwick and early lead, but Katie King&#8217;s goal tied it for the Trojanettes later in the first half.Berwick&#8217;s Jackie Nevel made six saves to preserve the victory, while Jillian Maute stopped seven shots for Nanticoke Area.Dallas 3, Wallenpaupack 1Hannah Yanovich helped the Mountaineers score three times late in the second half as Dallas rallied to beat the Buckhorns.Yanovich tied the game with a goal for Dallas with 13:20 to play, then assisted goals by Grace Young and Maddie Pertl over the next seven minutes.Mia Watson gave Wallenpaupack the lead with a goal late in the first half.Valley West 2, Lake-Lehman 0Rina Tsioles scored a goal in each half, providing the Spartans with just enough to hand Lake-Lehman it&#8217;s first loss in a game played Monday that dropped the Black Knights out of first place.Tsioles scored midway through the first half and early in the second to provide the game&#8217;s offense.Sydney Rusnock made six saves to record the shutout for Valley West.Lehman dropped into a second-place tie with Valley West in the WVC Division 1.Northwest 6, GAR 0Sydney Franchella scored two goals and added two assists as the Rangers remained in command of the WVC Division 2 by blanking the Grenadiers in a makeup game played Monday.
