WVC football: West Scranton breaks it open late against Pittston Area

<p>For the second straight week, Wil Garcia gave Hazleton Area the lead over a Lackawanna League team on the road in the fourth quarter.</p><p>Delaware Valley stormed right back.</p><p>Garcia had lifted the Cougars to a two-point win at Wallenpaupack a week ago. He had Hazleton Area in line for another victory with a short kick midway through the fourth on Friday. But the host Warriors returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, sparking them to a 42-31 win.</p><p>A back-and-forth affair saw multiple lead changes before the Warriors (3-3) took control late in the game.</p><p>Star Cougars rusher Damon Horton opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown before Delaware Valley fired back with two scores to take the lead.</p><p>Senior wideout Jacob Hunsinger turned in a strong first half by hauling in two touchdown catches to put the Cougars (2-4) back in front, but only briefly as Delaware Valley made it 21-21 at the half.</p><p>A Sparky Wolk touchdown and Garcia&#8217;s field goal eventually gave the Cougars a 31-28 advantage before the Warriors answered with the play of the game, an 84-yard kickoff return touchdown by Jawon Foushee.</p><p>Delaware Valley added another score late to put the game away.</p><p><strong>Williamsport 27, Scranton 10</strong></p><p>It wasn&#8217;t the type of game the Millionaires are used to playing. And it was made tougher by an injury to their top player.</p><p>But Williamsport turned in one of its best defensive efforts to help overcome the loss of running back Treyson Potts in a win over fellow Class 6A school Scranton. Quarterback Joe Fagnano figured in on three touchdowns in the victory.</p><p>The Williamsport Sun-Gazette reported that Potts limped off the field during the Millionaires&#8217; opening drive on offense and ultimately took a cart off the field. The Minnesota recruit later returned to the sideline but did not play.</p><p>Clinging to a 13-10 lead in the fourth, Williamsport (4-2) came up with a blocked punt and turned it into a Blaze McClements touchdown run to create some breathing room.</p><p>Fagnano opened the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Simmons. After the Knights (1-5) tied it up, Fagnano made it 13-7 on a 1-yard plunge.</p><p>After halftime, the Millionaires defense held strong after first-and-goal to force a Scranton field goal.</p><p>McClements recovered a fumble deep in Knights territory to set up a put-away 1-yard touchdown run by Fagnano.</p><p><strong>Towanda 42, Tunkhannock 32</strong></p><p>The visiting Tigers found themselves down 28-7 in the first half before piecing together some offense late in a non-conference loss.</p><p>Tunkhannock scored late and added a two-point conversion to pull within 10 points before running out of time. The Tigers fell to 2-4 on the season, ending their two-game winning streak.</p><style>
