Little consolation for Trace McSorley after breaking passing record in loss

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Meyers threw two passes on Saturday night and they were probably two too many.The Mohawks ran through, over and around Mid Valley all game, piling up 296 yards on 29 rushes on the way to a 42-14 victory in a non-conference game at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.Meyers (5-3) has already clinched a District 2 Class 3A playoff spot, but the win kept the Mohawks in the running for a possible home playoff game. They are sixth in the standings and the top four teams open the playoffs at home.Mid Valley (1-7) saw its hopes for a D2-2A playoff berth dim. Four of the five D2-2A teams make the postseason, and the Spartans are fifth.The victory also served as a bounce back for Meyers, which was held to a season-low 53 rushing yards last weekend in a 45-6 loss to Wyoming Area.&#8220;I thought they responded well,&#8221; Meyers coach Jeff Labatch said. &#8220;Offensively, we played well. Defensively, we let up yards. But overall, we played a solid game on both sides of the ball.&#8221;Nazir Dunell led the ground attack with 161 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries. Kevin Dessoye ran 12 times for 77 yards and two TDs. And while fellow back Darrian Tyson didn&#8217;t have the same success running the ball, he had a couple long kickoff returns that set up Meyers in prime field position.Dunell, a PIAA hurdles state gold medalist, had the most impressive scoring run, a 20-yard TD with 20 seconds left in the first half to give Meyers a 28-14 lead. Dunell darted through the left side and as four Mid Valley defenders closed in at the 5-yard line he put on an extra burst. The four defenders ended up in a pile out of bounds; Dunell ended up in the endzone.Meyers then took control on a 35-yard touchdown run by Dunell late in the third quarter where he split blocks by Tyson and lineman Ryan Maffei. His first touchdown was a 62-yard run at 1:55 of the first quarter and only 28 seconds after Mid Valley took its only lead of the game, 8-6.Dessoye started the scoring with a 16-yard run midway through the first quarter and added a 1-yard score in the second to build the lead to 20-8. Backup Timothy Tyndall closed out the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.Meyers will embark on a short week followed by a long week to close out its final season in school history.
