Wolf signs legislation to crack down on speeding in work zones

<p>UNION TWP. &#8212; The Northwest Area School Board approved three major purchases this week totaling over $14,000.</p><p>These expenditures include $11,900 for the purchase of a handicapped-accessible van; $1,108 for the manufacture and installation of 11-foot-high chain-link gates at the athletic field; and $1,227 for the purchase of a water meter from EPSCO to meet DEP requirements at the primary school building.</p><p>In addition, the board OK&#8217;d a $2,000 expenditure for a drug and alcohol prevention program for students (fourth- and fifth-graders) at the intermediate school.</p><p>Wyoming Valley Drug and Alcohol Services Inc. will work with those students.</p><p>During the administrative report phase of the meeting, it was noted a Hanover Area football fan praised the Northwest band for its performance at this season&#8217;s Northwest-Hanover football game. </p><p>High school Principal Ryan Miner read a letter authored by the Hanover fan who described the band as &#8220;great&#8221; and its performance as &#8220;wonderful.&#8221;</p><p>Miner also provided an update on recovery work from an Aug. 18 fire at the middle/high school in Union Township that delayed the start of classes. </p><p>He said five classrooms have been restored and are being utilized.</p><p>Miner added work is scheduled in November at the high school auditorium.</p><p>The board also acted on these other matters:</p><p>&#8226; Approved the interim appointment of Mary Jane Wido as a part-time paraprofessional.</p><p>&#8226; Advanced the appointment of Jamie Scott as a part-time personal care assistant.</p><p>&#8226; Approved the transfer of Stacy Hinkley to full-time paraprofessional.</p><p>&#8226; Changed the occupational status of Barry Shoemaker to lead custodian from facilities manager.</p><p>&#8226; Approved contracts with Tom Adams and Carol Hoover for nursing services during the 2018-19 term at a rate of $25 per hour.</p><p>&#8226; Approved contracts for transportation services with April Bonham and Desiree Adams.</p><p>&#8226; Announced that obsolete and unused equipment is available for purchase by the highest bidder.</p><p>&#8226; Announced that disciplinary proceedings had been imposed against an employee who was not identified by name. The employee was identified only as No. 9175.</p><style>
