Wyoming Valley West boys soccer heading into districts with confidence

<p>The PIAA Golf Championships begin on Monday, and for the first time since 2000 the Wyoming Valley Conference is represented by five athletes. The conference also has one of the contenders for the state team championship.</p><p>The event is held on Monday through Wednesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. Monday is the first round of the individual championships, with the final round being held on Tuesday. On Wednesday, state team champions will be crowned in two classifications of boys and girls divisions.</p><p>Here&#8217;s a closer look at the Wyoming Valley Conference competitors at the PIAA Golf Championships:</p><p><strong>GIRLS</strong></p><p><strong>CLASS 2A</strong></p><p><strong>Kyleen McCance, Hanover Area</strong></p><p>Grade: 9; Coach: Bob Shoemaker; How she got here: She took fourth at the East Regional Tournament last week shooting an 85, the same score she fired at the Pre-district tournament to place second and qualify for districts. At the District 2 Tournament, McCance took second with an 89. She is the first state qualifier for the Hawkeyes since Eric Plisko in 2004. She busted onto the scene in the Preseason Tryba Tournament with a top 20 finish to start her high school career and shooting the lowest score of any female at that event.</p><p><strong>Jessica McClellan, MMI Prep</strong></p><p>Grade: 12; coach: Ryan Jastremsky; How she got here: McClellan claimed the East Regional championship last week becoming the first female in school history to accomplish the feat, and was the first golfer from the conference to win a regional title since Brandon Matthews from Pittston Area in 2011. McClellan is now a two-time state qualifier. She also claimed her first district title earlier this month after winning the WVC Pre-district tournament.</p><p><strong>BOYS</strong></p><p><strong>CLASS 2A</strong></p><p><strong>Jeremy Callahan, Wyoming Seminary</strong></p><p>Grade: 11; Coach: Matt Occhiato; How he got here: Callahan became the first state qualifier for the Blue Knights since Emily Boyd in 2004 by shooting a 77 and tying for fifth place at last week&#8217;s regional tournament. He reached the regional tournament after tying for second at the District 2 Tournament with a score of 77. He placed fourth at Pre-districts in last month&#8217;s event.</p><p><strong>Bobby Lugiano, Lake-Lehman</strong></p><p>Grade: 11; Coach: Matt Shaul; How he got here: His score of 82 at last week&#8217;s regional tourney just made the cut for states to tie for 13th. That performance came after he claimed his first district title. Prior to the district tournament, he won his second straight WVC Pre-district championship. He started the season at the Tryba with a top 5 finish. He&#8217;s the first golfer from Lake-Lehman to advance to the PIAA Championships since Dustin Kapson in 2000.</p><p><strong>CLASS 3A</strong></p><p><strong>Logan Paczewski, Dallas</strong></p><p>Grade: 9; Coach: Jane Kilduff; He he got here: Paczewski shot the lowest score of the day by a WVC golfer at regionals last week with a 75 to tie for 12th to become the first golfer from Dallas to reach the state tournament since Justin Jumper in 1996. Paczewski has accomplished a lot in his freshman year. He claimed the Pre-district and the Tryba titles, while finishing second at districts.</p><p><strong>Dallas Boys Team</strong></p><p>Record: 13-0; Coach: Jane Kilduff; Competitors: Ethan Zawatski, Sr.; Matt Dolan, Jr.; Cooper Kelley, Jr.; Brett Ostrowski, Jr.; Logan Paczewski, Fr.</p><p>How they got here: The Mountaineers have had an incredible season that started with a record-breaking score of 289 to claim the team title at the Tryba Tournament. That score broke the score Holy Redeemer set in 2012, the year they finished as runner-up in the state. From there, Dallas took off finishing 10-0 in the regular season. The team then defeated Hazleton Area by 46 strokes to claim the WVC Class 3A team title, and edged Abington Heights by four shots to pick up the District 2 team crown. At the subregional event against District 4&#8217;s East Juniata, the Mountaineers won easily, by 51 shots to reach the state tournament.</p><style>
