Franklin concerned McSorley ‘carrying too much of the load on offense’ for PSU

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; Eric Trump on Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday &#8212; these two appearances on behalf of Republican John Chrin offer a clear message in the 8th Congressional District race.</p><p>&#8220;Chrin can win,&#8221; said the president&#8217;s son at a campaign event at Chrin&#8217;s downtown Scranton headquarters. &#8220;And I can tell you one more thing &#8212; we are never, ever going to get tired of winning.&#8221;</p><p>Chrin, 55, of Monroe County, is trying to deny Democrat Matt Cartwright a fourth 2-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The 8th District covers a big swath of Northeastern Pennsylvania, including Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke, Pittston and Hazleton.</p><p>Trump, 34, and older brother Donald Trump Jr. serve as trustees of The Trump Organization. Eric is the third child and second son of President Donald Trump and his first wife, Ivana Trump.</p><p>Eric accompanied Chrin on a tour of the region Tuesday, stopping in Hawley and Wallenpaupack before greeting about 100 supporters in Scranton.</p><p>&#8220;I know the Scranton area well,&#8221; Eric said. &#8220;We love this area. I think over the last five years, I&#8217;ve been in Scranton more than Hillary Clinton.&#8221;</p><p>He was quick to hit all the talking points that his father often uses: the economy is growing, unemployment is at its lowest in decades, strengthening our borders is a must, jobs are returning from overseas, and the stock market has hit record highs.</p><p>&#8220;John Chrin is not a career politician,&#8221; Eric said. &#8220;And when he gets to Washington, his life will exponentially change. I know that because it happened to my father.&#8221;</p><p>He explained that Trump Sr. had &#8220;a pretty good life&#8221; before he was elected president.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not saying you should feel bad for him, but he got into this to go to Washington and fix it,&#8221; said Eric. &#8220;Every day, my father has to deal with being shouted at and abused, but he believes we can make America better. We all signed up for it and we will see it through.&#8221;</p><p>Chrin noted the country was in a state of stagnation before Trump won the White House.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been campaigning throughout the district and I know there are more Democrat votes than Republican,&#8221; Chrin said. &#8220;But when voters meet me and hear about my values, they listen. I know I won&#8217;t get every Democratic vote, but I&#8217;m confident we can win this race.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;And when I get to Congress, I will work with President Trump,&#8221; Chrin went on. &#8220;We will continue tax cuts for the middle class and we will eliminate all those unnecessary regulations that hinder small business growth. And we need to assure our borders are protected.&#8221;</p><p>Scott Wagner, Republican candidate for governor, attended the event, one of some 700 he said he has been at during the campaign.</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot at stake in this election,&#8221; Wagner said. &#8220;Gov. Wolf thinks he is going to be re-elected. If he is, you can expect a huge tax hike next year. We need to get this done. Let&#8217;s show that there&#8217;s a red wave in Pennsylvania.&#8221;</p><p>Val DiGiorgio, chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, said the GOP army has been deployed, making some 5 million calls to prospective voters.</p><p>Cartwright, 57, of Moosic, won in 2016 by 8 percentage points in a district President Trump won by 10 points.</p><p>Cartwright recently said it&#8217;s time for the Democratic Party to return to what he called &#8220;bread and butter issues&#8221; and &#8220;identity politics.&#8221; He said the best way to increase jobs is to improve infrastructure and increase manufacturing.</p><p>Cartwright said he voted against last year&#8217;s tax bill because 83 percent of the money saved went to the highest 1 percent earners. He said he opposed it because it also drastically reduced the corporate tax rate &#8212; taking it from 35 percent to 21 percent. And for multi-national corporations, Cartwright said the rates were even more egregious &#8212; from 35 percent to 15 percent.</p><p>Cartwright will debate Chrin on Oct. 29 on WVIA.</p><style>

Pence will be at Valley Aviation, 1989 Wyoming Ave. &#8212; located at the Wyoming Valley Airport.</p><p>Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and will close at 11. The rally will conclude by 12:30 p.m.</p><p>Dan Meuser, Republican candidate in the 9th District, is also expected to attend.</p><p>The event is free and open to the general public. No bags, purses, or signs will be permitted in the facility.
