KINGSTON &#8212; The last thing Alieu Jallow wanted was a first-round exit.Not for his seniors.The Wyoming Valley West sophomore wanted to do something. He wanted to make an impact. And with time running out in a scoreless District 2 Class 3A boys soccer quarterfinal game, Jallow got his chance.As the game approached the 70-minute mark, he found himself with an open shot in front of the Tunkhannock goal. He took it and found the back of the net, scoring the game&#8217;s lone goal and propelling the Spartans to a 1-0 victory into the semifinals.The third-seeded Wyoming Valley West will travel to second-seeded Dallas on Monday in the Class 3A semifinals.&#8220;It was really big. Not just for me, but the seniors, too,&#8221; Jallow said. &#8220;It was their last (home) game. I didn&#8217;t want it to be a loss and them leave high school with a loss. We&#8217;re already in districts and I think we have a really good chance at winning it.&#8220;I was on the sideline. They played the ball in. I just kind of cut in and just kept going and I saw an open shot and I just took it. I had to stay calm. It just went in.&#8221;It wasn&#8217;t pretty for the Spartans offense.Just last week, Wyoming Valley West travelled to Tunkhannock and beat the Tigers 4-0. This time around, the Tigers tightened things up and held the Spartans to just one goal on 17 shots.They also took an aggressive Wyoming Valley West team out of its rhythm, causing a handful of offsides calls while the Spartans were on the breakaway.&#8220;They came in with a good game plan today. I give them a lot of credit,&#8221; Wyoming Valley West head coach Charlie Whited said. &#8220;Mark (Stroney) is a good coach and the made the adjustments that he thought was the right thing to do. You probably noticed how many offsides got called. They changed their thing. They pressed us a little bit. They played a little higher, tried to push us offsides and luckily we capitalized on the opportunity and came out a winner.&#8221;Despite the lack of depth and experience both in net and on defense, the Tigers gave an effort that Stroney was more than pleased with.To put themselves in a position to take the lead midway through the second half on a indirect free kick that almost turned into a goal and then again after Wyoming Valley West took the lead with 10:31 remaining in regulation was a positive to take into the offseason.&#8220;We had a good match,&#8221; said the Tunkhannock head coach. &#8220;We just don&#8217;t have the depth that Valley West has and basically they wore us out as the match continued. We had a couple of chances, not as many as they did, but we gave it a good effort. Valley West is a good team.&#8220;We did what we could with our players. One, zero, not a bad way to go out.&#8221;Now the Spartans have Dallas on tap, the third meeting between the two teams this season.Little by little, Wyoming Valley West was able to improve when playing the Mountaineers &#8212; from a 2-0 Sept. 4 loss to a 0-0 tie Sept. 28 tie. This time the Spartans will look to finish the job.Dallas 5, Valley View 3Zach Holthaus scored two goals in the final seven minutes, snapping a 3-3 tie and giving Dallas a victory in a District 2 Class 3A quarterfinal game.Holthaus scored all five Mountaineers goals. He got his team off to a 2-0 start off assists from Ryan Fisher and John Betzko.
