WVC football: Northwest rolls past Holy Redeemer

KINGSTON &#8212; Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s 46-21 win over Williamsport on Friday night should have been a lot closer.Before the season started, a healthy Williamsport (5-5) and Wyoming Valley West (5-5) teams were set to clash in a marquee match p during Week 10 of the high school football season.That dream match up feels like ages ago. Both teams have been riddled by injuries. But both still have hopes for the postseason.Heading into the contest, the questions for the evening were who was healthy for Williamsport and would Spartans running back Carson Canavan return to the lineup.The Millionaires started freshman quarterback Dallas Griess in place of Joe Fagnano, who was having a good season. Griess wasn&#8217;t afforded a safety net in the backfield since Minnesota-commit Treyson Potts suffered a season-ending ACL injury.Canavan returned to the lineup right where he left off, running through defenses.After fumbling on the first play of the game, the Spartans coughed up the ball to Williamsport. The Millionaires capitalized on the opportunity when Griess rushed for a 1-yard score to put his team up 7-0.Canavan didn&#8217;t let his fumble affect the way he played for the rest of the game. He answered back with a score of his own, a 38-yard burst. The senior running back finished the evening rushing for 186 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns.&#8220;It definitely felt good to get back out there,&#8221; Canavan said on his return to the field. &#8220;It was risky considering I was a bit dinged up, but it worked out.&#8221;The Spartans looked like an offensive juggernaut, finding the end zone three times in the second quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Nah-Syr Garner&#8217;s 34-yard snag with 4:31 left to play before the half drew shrieks of excitement from the fans on a cold night at Spartan Stadium.&#8220;It felt good to see us play for four quarters,&#8221; said Wyoming Valley West coach Pat Keating. &#8220;These guys played with a lot of fire tonight and it was nice to get back on track.&#8221;The Spartans capped off their Homecoming victory with a 33-yard strike from quarterback Jake Shusta to Dylan Nastanski to extend the lead to 46-14.Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s postseason fate hangs in the balance of Pocono Mountain East defeating Pocono Mountain West on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans need PM East to lose to have a chance to get the final spot in the four-team District 2/11 Class 5A playoffs.&#8220;It&#8217;s out of our hands now,&#8221; Keating said. &#8220;Hopefully we get another crack at it next week and play for another district championship.
