WVC football: Hunsinger, Hazleton Area holds off Crestwood in Greg Myers’ finale

KINGSTON &#8212; When the final whistle blew Friday night at Nesbitt Stadium, the Wyoming Seminary boys soccer team took a collective sigh of relief.Then the Blue Knights raced over toward the sideline between the two benches to celebrate.Lake-Lehman gave Wyoming Seminary its best shot, but it wasn&#8217;t enough. Whether it was free kicks that led to headers in the box, corner kicks or just hard work from the Black Knights to set themselves up with offensive opportunities in front of the net, senior goalkeeper Ryan Anderson and the Wyoming Seminary defense stood tall each and every time.For the second time this season, the Blue Knights shut out Lake-Lehman, but this time it sent them into the next round of district playoffs. Third-seeded Wyoming Seminary edged the sixth-seeded Black Knights, 1-0, to set up a Class 2A semifinal matchup at No. 2 Lakeland on Monday at 4:30 p.m.&#8220;We just kept focusing on the ball,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary senior Colin Sung said. &#8220;We just tried to not lose the ball. We just tried to clear it out. We were (working) for a shutout. It was &#8212; I don&#8217;t know. It was so good defensively. Me, Reggie (Grayek), my defenders and Ryan (Anderson) in goal. It was so good.&#8220;I&#8217;m so excited right now. I&#8217;m so happy right now. This is my whole life.&#8221;It was Sung that got it all started for the Blue Knights.Less than 30 seconds into the game, the senior defender made an impact. On offense.With the ball around midfield, Sung sent a long pass to Luke Johns, who was streaking on the net. While Johns wasn&#8217;t able to get a clean shot off, Grayek was able to put the loose ball in the back of the net with the Lake-Lehman goalie out of position, giving the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead with 39:25 remaining in the first half.&#8220;I saw Luke, the striker, and I tried to pass it to him, but I didn&#8217;t know it was that good,&#8221; Sung said. &#8220;I shot it and he got it, and I was like, &#8216;Oh, my God! Oh, my God!&#8217; Finally, Reggie scored and I was like, &#8216;This is insane. This is my emotional high.&#8217; &#8221;&#8220;I&#8217;m just chilling in the center and it was right there, wrapped in a gift for me, and I just put it away,&#8221; Grayek added. &#8220;Then we just parked the bus.&#8221;Turns out Grayek&#8217;s goal is a result of hard work in practice.For the past week and a half, the Blue Knights have been working on &#8220;diagonal balls from our outside backs in the box,&#8221; and Sung was able to put it together during the biggest game of the season.&#8220;That&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve been concentrating on,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary head coach Aaron Littzi said of the goal. &#8220;Colin came out nice and early and did it. He just played unbelievable tonight and we&#8217;re happy.&#8221;Going into Friday&#8217;s tilt, it was anyone&#8217;s game despite the difference in seed.Both teams had won 2-0 on their home turf against the other. For the Blue Knights, however, Grayek felt he and his teammates took the pedal off the gas in the Oct. 3 matchup and we&#8217;re going to do that again.And now, with the win, Wyoming Seminary is moving on to the semifinals.&#8220;We beat them 2-0 the first time we played them, so we got a little cocky,&#8221; Grayek said. &#8220;We went in not worried, but this one we were coming for revenge and everybody dug down and gave 100 percent.&#8220;Coach always says a good team needs to get knocked down a peg so they can go back up. I definitely think (the loss) helped us a lot.&#8221;Meyers 2, Western Wayne 1The Mohawks come back and score two straight unanswered goals to beat Western Wayne on Thursday night in the District 2 2A playoffs.Aidan McFarlane and Tanner Nilon scored for Meyers.Meyers advances to play the winner of Scranton Prep 3:30 p.m. Monday.CLASS 3ACrestwood 6, Coughlin 0The Comets beat Coughlin Wednesday night in a District 2 3A quarterfinal.Max Gariano lead Crestwood with four points, three goals and an assist while Hubert Herrera added a goal and two assists.The Crusaders will play host to fourth-seeded Wallenpaupack 6:30 p.m. Monday.GIRLS SOCCERCLASS 3ACrestwood 1, Wyoming Valley West 0 (PKs)Top-seeded Crestwood avoided a scare, taking down the No. 9 Spartans.
