PIAA Cross Country Championships: Dallas’ Mitchell Rome finishes fourth

HERSHEY &#8212; With one last late surge, Bryce Zapusek capped his Holy Redeemer cross country career with a state medal and led the Royals to a fifth-place finish in the Class 2A boys team standings at Saturday&#8217;s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships.Zapusek was just outside the top-25 finish he needed for a state medal with about a mile to go when he passed assistant coach Dave Levandoski&#8217;s vantage point along the course.&#8220;Just the way he was running; I liked the way he ran,&#8221; said Levandoski, who handles much of the training for the boys team. &#8220;He looked good. I was comfortable he was going to be able to make it.&#8220; &#8230; He ran a great race.&#8221;Zapusek finished the 3.1-mile Hershey course, through wind gusts that sent tents toppling throughout the day and muddy conditions that have marred the entire season, in a time of 17:57.The Royals, who went unbeaten in the Wyoming Valley Conference and earned a state team shot by taking the District 2 title, wound up fifth out of 19 teams.&#8220;In my mind, I was happy if we could finish fifth or better,&#8221; Levandoski said. &#8220;By all means, fifth in the state is phenomenal.&#8220;The kids had a great season. I&#8217;m proud of them.&#8221;The Holy Redeemer program went undefeated in winning both the WVC boys and girls championships. The girls qualified two individuals for the state meet.Running as a full team one last time, the Holy Redeemer boys placed four runners in the top 80 of the 228-runner field. Lukas Volpetti, Chris Hine and George Strish came in 58th, 74th and 79th.Joey Rowley completed the five-man team score in 156th.Both girls entries from the school finished in the top half of the field.
