It doesn&#8217;t matter what happened in the past or what may be coming in the very near future.Because teams that find their minds wandering out of the moment may not make it out of this weekend and into state championship week.That&#8217;s why maintaining focus will be critical Saturday for the Holy Redeemer girls volleyball team and the Wyoming Area girls soccer team, along with field hockey teams Wyoming Area, Wyoming Seminary and Wyoming Valley West.Those five Wyoming Valley Conference teams who will represent District 2 in the PIAA quarterfinals won&#8217;t be as concerned with rankings, records or which team is supposed to win as much as who does.&#8220;Yeah, when we come into each game, we come in with a blank slate,&#8221; said junior forward Julia Christian of the No. 16 state-ranked Wyoming Seminary field hockey team. &#8220;We come in as if it&#8217;s a new beginning.&#8221;For a few of them, reaching the state quarterfinals is old hat.Holy Redeemer&#8217;s girls volleyball team has been there every year since the PIAA went away from early-round pool play in 2012 and will make its seventh consecutive state quarterfinal appearance. The Royals, 22-1 overall, will face District 1 champion New Hope-Solebury with a chance to reach Tuesday&#8217;s Class 2A state semifinals for the second time in three years &#8212; when current standouts Skylar Osenkarski and Julia Andrejko were both sophomores.Valley West and Sem both bring plenty of punch back from teams that lost in the field hockey state finals last year.&#8220;We know all the pressure is on us,&#8221; Valley West forward Cameryn Forgash said.Valley West, which will face first-time state participant and District 11 winner Bangor (21-1-1) and freshman phenom Kaylee Holland in the Class 2A quarters, features playmaking midfielder Rina Tsioles, forwards Cameryn Forgash and Karaline Stelma and goalie Sydney Rusnock after all of them played significant roles in helping the 15-3-1 Spartans finish with a PIAA silver medal last season.&#8220;We&#8217;re a different team,&#8221; said Tsioles, who scored on a penalty stroke in Valley West&#8217;s 2-0 victory over Great Valley in Tuesday&#8217;s state opener. &#8220;As the season goes on, we keep getting better and better.&#8221;Not many Class A field hockey teams are supposed to be better than Sem, which is ranked 16th in Pennsylvania and No. 2 in its class in the state by MaxFieldHockey.The 18-2-1 Blue Knights have just about every key contributor back from their 2017 PIAA runner-up finish, including scoring machines Hannah Maxwell, Alex Wesneski, Aubrey Mytych, Christian and shooter-turned-defender Kelsey Reznick.They&#8217;ll meet District 11 champ Lehighton (17-4-1) and Karissa Hough, who scored the winner with 12 minutes left in Tuesday&#8217;s 2-1 state opener.&#8220;Every game, we have to take it as it is,&#8221; Christian said after contributing a goal and an assist in Sem&#8217;s 3-0 victory in a state opener. &#8220;Even if we&#8217;re having an off-game, the fact that we can manage to try to score helps us and builds our confidence.&#8221;Wyoming Area built up a a frenzy with two teams that have never reached this point before.The school&#8217;s girls soccer and field hockey teams both made their state debuts successful Tuesday to advance to the PIAA quarterfinals.Now, Aleah Kranson, Tierney Porfirio, goalie Lauren Kelly and the rest of the 17-5 Warriors girls soccer team will face District 3 runner-up Boiling Springs with a chance to get to state title week.Just before that, Kayla Kiwak, Lauren Parante, Toni Minichello and a Warriors field hockey team that boasts an 18-1-2 record will square off with District 3 No. 3 team Newport for a Wyoming Area sports doubleheader at Danville High School.&#8220;The big thing is, they don&#8217;t know what to expect,&#8221; Wyoming Area field hockey coach Erin McGinley said just before her team first stepped into states.Actually, nobody does.That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s critical to keep minds in the moment, and ignore urges to start looking behind or ahead.&#8220;Play each one, one at a time,&#8221; Valley West coach Linda Fithian said. &#8220;We don&#8217;t overlook anyone, we&#8217;re just thrilled to be here. We&#8217;re excited to play it. We&#8217;re still working hard to get better.&#8221;<style>
