Flavor of the Week: Thanksgiving is all about family, food, football and fantasy football

<p>UNION TWP. &#8212; With student safety in mind, the Northwest Area School Board voted this week to retain four individuals to provide security at the intermediate and primary schools at a cost not to exceed $150 per day.</p><p>The four included Charles West, Joel Ludwig, Edward Smith and Dorothy Gruver.</p><p>The hirings came after the board announced a decision to rescind a motion from August that stated the constable services of West would be utilized for security at the aforementioned school buildings. That situation has changed with this week&#8217;s decision. After the session, board solicitor Angela Evans said the matter could come up for further review at the Dec. 6 meeting.</p><p>The school board, which currently has Gary Boberick as its chairman, is also scheduled to reorganize Dec. 6.</p><p>The board also acted to transfer $13,580 from its capital projects fund to pay for a series of projects that include: $5,245 to Yost Excavating &amp; Hauling for parking lot work; $2,775 to Mesko Glass for kitchen door replacement; $4,390 to Mesko for boiler room doors; and $1,170 to Eastern Penn Supply for a new water meter at the primary school.</p><p>In conjunction with the water meter purchase, the board approved a proposal by Willis Ide and Sons ($435) to install the meter, which meets the requirements of the state Department of Environmental Protection.</p><p>In other business:</p><p>&#8226; Northwest Area Middle/High School principal Ryan Miner stated repair work on the second floor of the fire-damaged school has reach a point where teachers will be able to access their classrooms starting Nov. 25; a &#8220;full return&#8221; to class activities is set for Dec. 3. An Aug. 18 fire damaged classrooms at the school and delayed the start of classes.</p><p>&#8226; The board announced the &#8220;posting&#8221; of several varsity coach positions for the 2019 season: cross-country, field hockey and football.</p><p>&#8226; The board engaged in a long discussion on setting a salary scale for employees working in support positions at athletic events. The scale was approved.</p><p>&#8226; Members OK&#8217;d a request by Taylor Stair to attend the Wilson Reading Training System seminar in Conshohocken, Pa., at a cost of $1,500.</p><style>

Northwest school board makes security changes
