Sears staves off liquidation, stores to remain open

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A man with a criminal history of assaulting girlfriends was arraigned Wednesday after a woman claimed she was physically and sexually assaulted for hours, according to court records.</p><p>The naked 30-year-old woman escaped the Conyngham Avenue home of Matthew Adam Gyle, 39, telling police he forced her to remove her clothes and assaulted her. She only managed to escape when she convinced Gyle to take a shower together, court records say.</p><p>It is the second time in three months Gyle has been charged with assaulting the woman.</p><p>State police charged Gyle on Nov. 21 when the woman claimed he punched her several times in the face, blaming her for ruining his life, as they were driving on Route 29 in Plymouth Township. She jumped out of Gyle&#8217;s moving vehicle and flagged down a motorist for help, records say.</p><p>The case against Gyle for the alleged Nov. 21 assault was dismissed when the woman opted not to testify against him.</p><p>As Gyle was arraigned Wednesday in Luzerne County Central Court, he claimed the latest case will be dismissed because his girlfriend won&#8217;t pursue charges.</p><p>According to the criminal complaint:</p><p>Police responded early Saturday to a residence on Laurel Street after a homeowner found a woman naked and wrapped in a rug. She told the homeowner she was held captive by Gyle for several hours and punched in the face several times.</p><p>The woman was transported to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where she spoke with officers.</p><p>She claimed Gyle woke her up at about 1 a.m., calling her names and blaming her for having sexual encounters with other people. When she tried to leave, she told police Gyle grabbed an ice pick and told her she wasn&#8217;t going to get out alive.</p><p>She told police Gyle tackled her and forced her to remove her clothes. Gyle then got on top of the woman and sexually assaulted her twice.</p><p>The woman later convinced Gyle to take a shower together. After the shower, the woman was able to escape and found a rug to wrap her body as she sought help, running into a man in an alley near Laurel Street.</p><p>The woman suffered broken bones in her face.</p><p>Gyle was arraigned by District Judge James Haggerty on two counts of simple assault and one count each of aggravated indecent assault, false imprisonment, unlawful restraint and terroristic threats. He was jailed at the county correctional facility for lack of $20,000 bail.</p><p>Court records say Gyle was sentenced in March 2012 to about four to roughly eight-and-a-half years in state prison on charges of aggravated assault and simple assault after a jury convicted him of stabbing an ex-girlfriend with a screwdriver and punching her inside his home in 2011.</p><p>Gyle was sentenced to one year on probation in May 2010 for assaulting another girlfriend at his residence. A probation violation resulted in Gyle being sentenced to jail for six months, records say.</p><style>
