Residents brave cold, snow to mark Knox Mine Disaster

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Times Leader Media Group Publisher Mike Murray has been chosen to serve on the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA Board of Directors.</p><p>Murray was elected to a board seat Friday night during the Y&#8217;s annual meeting at AppleTree Terrace At Newberry Estate in Dallas Township. His term runs until January 2020.</p><p>&#8220;The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA is a valuable organization that does so much good work in our communities,&#8221; Murray said.</p><p>&#8220;From its fitness facilities to its early childhood education, summer camp and after-school programs, the Y touches the lives of Luzerne County residents of all ages, and of all means,&#8221; Murray added. &#8220;I am proud to serve in this capacity and support the YMCA&#8217;s mission.&#8221;</p><p>With headquarters on West Northampton Street in the city, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA traces its roots back to the 1860s.</p><p>The organization had 4,570 members as of year&#8217;s end. Among other key statistics, the year also saw 3,776 volunteer hours logged, 1,374 people participating in water-safety programs, 274 children enrolled in early childhood education programs and 136 children in its after school program.</p><p>A veteran executive of the publishing, media and management consulting fields, Murray joined Times Leader parent company Civitas Media in August 2014 as vice president of circulation, and was named publisher of the Times Leader Media Group in April 2016.</p><p>Since his arrival in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Murray has been an active member of many community organizations, including the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce, Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, the Diamond City Partnership and CASA of Luzerne County. Murray also has been named to the board of directors of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.</p><style>

Times Leader publisher Murray elected to YMCA board
