<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A newly renovated inpatient unit opened Wednesday at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre &#8212; the latest in a series of additions and enhancements to provide care close to home for residents in that end of the city and surrounding area.</p><p>The new $3.1 million, 8,000-square-foot unit is located on the hospital&#8217;s sixth floor and includes 14 private, medical/surgical inpatient rooms with telemetry capability. The hospital now has 48 inpatient beds, officials say.</p><p>&#8220;The opening of this new inpatient unit is our latest investment to better serve our community,&#8221; said Dan Landesberg, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre administrative director. &#8220;We have invested more than $22 million since 2015 to provide needed services close to home for our patients.&#8221;</p><p>A multidisciplinary team of hospitalist physicians, nurses, laboratory and radiology technicians, physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists, and others will care for patients in the new unit.</p><p>He said the addition complements the Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre Emergency Department, which reopened last summer and cares for more than 50 patients per day, and the acute inpatient program, which has achieved 99th percentile patient experience scores for three years running.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re growing,&#8221; Landesberg said. &#8220;And there is a higher demand for inpatient beds. We provide a convenient, friendly and familiar facility to the community.&#8221;</p><p>Landesberg said Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre has 500 employees. Geisinger purchased the facility on Church Street in 2005. Landesberg said inpatient rooms were closed until 2009 and emergency services returned in July 2018.</p><p>In addition to the reopening of the emergency department, other recent enhancements at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre include:</p><p>&#8226; Expanded outpatient services, including a Surgical Specialties Clinic and Medication Assisted Therapy Clinic. </p><p>&#8226; Additional imaging access and equipment, including the addition of vascular ultrasound and CT scanning.</p><p>&#8226; Expanded laboratory medicine services including the construction of a $1 million laboratory.</p><p>&#8226; Expanded outpatient therapy access.</p><p>&#8226; The addition of the Mako robotic-arm surgery system and development of a total joint replacement Center of Excellence.</p><p>For more information, visit geisinger.org.</p><style>
