Institute Insights: Metro region’s stats give reason for optimism

<p>DURYEA &#8212; As many were making final preparations for game day, a group of roughly two dozen churchgoers kept busy inside the Sacred Heart Church rectory Sunday as they pumped out a continuous supply of pizza and wings.</p><p>The Nativity of Our Lord Parish Men&#8217;s Society held its third annual homemade wing and pizza sale, packing over 110 orders of the party staples for hungry customers.</p><p>Greeting eager patrons awaiting their game day meals, society secretary Jef Bauman said the event has flourished since two parishioners came up with the idea three years ago.</p><p>&#8220;They said let&#8217;s do a wing sale. They like our picnic wings, let&#8217;s do it for the Super Bowl,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;It&#8217;s taken off since then.&#8221;</p><p>More than 210 dozen wings and 120 trays of pizza will be made to meet pre-order demand, with patrons having a two-hour window to pick up the delicious delicacies before kickoff.</p><p>Pizzas featured homemade sauces and personal cheese blends while wings were offered in three flavors along with sides of bleu cheese and celery.</p><p>Roughly 20 individuals had been at the hall since about 9 a.m. cooking, garnishing and packing the dishes. Volunteers ranged in age from teenagers all the up to parishioners in their 80s, Bauman noted.</p><p>Standing in the kitchen with a large bowl of wings, society member Matthew Gromelski said he enjoys volunteering his time to the event each year.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s fun. We have a great group of people here, and everybody likes to be here and make things fun,&#8221; he said while shaking up a mixture of wings and sauce.</p><p>In a separate kitchen, parishioners Brian Dankulich and Eddie Winn were busy creating the final few dozen orders of wings and pizza.</p><p>Nearing the end of a 120-tray batch, Winn said he believes the event has become so successful because of its small, but giving, community.</p><p>&#8220;Everybody likes to give back to the local communities, specifically here in Duryea,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Winn said he plans of making it home in time to watch the big game himself &#8212; and enjoy some of his handiwork while doing it.</p><p>Meanwhile, Laura Shovlin was happy she didn&#8217;t have to cook dinner tonight.</p><p>The Duryea resident and churchgoer said she first ordered from the event last year, and decided it was too good to pass up this year.</p><p>&#8220;Its a good way to support the church, and the food tastes good to me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s all the reason I need.&#8221;</p><p>Proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of an automated external defibrillator for the church.</p><style>
