Beyond the Byline: Reynold Derenfeld was a Hall of Famer

<p>PLAINS TWP. &#8212; A fixture of Northeastern Pennsylvania entertainment is celebrating a major milestone: The Woodlands turns 50 this year.</p><p>Now, the resort has announced a year&#8217;s worth of celebrations to mark its big birthday.</p><p>Co-owner Mitch Kornfeld said in a press release that the celebration would center around the one thing the resort is best known for: fun.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to make it fun,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what we do. And we&#8217;re going to give back to a community that&#8217;s been so good to us.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Special events</strong></p><p>The year&#8217;s plans include:</p><p>&#8226; Kicking off the year of celebration is a 50th anniversary mixer on Feb. 28 that will &#8220;entertain longtime vendors and members of the media.&#8221;</p><p>&#8226; On June 21, an anniversary gala will be held for friends, patrons and supporters of the resort, and will also be open to the public.</p><p>&#8226; Coming in July, an outdoor festival will be held in the resort&#8217;s newly expanded Bridal Gardens. This event will be family-friendly, with the resort playing host to food trucks, games, face-painting and crafts.</p><p><strong>New offerings</strong></p><p>The resort will also be adding new weekly events throughout the year.</p><p>Starting in May, karaoke night comes to the resort&#8217;s streamside bars on Tuesday nights, with jazz music nights to come on Wednesday. Thursdays will be Nashville nights, with a shifting cast of bands and DJs playing country music.</p><p>Finally, Friday will be &#8220;Flashback to 5-Day,&#8221; an homage to the club&#8217;s happy hours of old. Sunday nights will be &#8220;Rock of Ages,&#8221; inspired by the previously popular &#8220;30 Something&#8221; nights.</p><p>The Woodlands opened in 1969, and has been family-owned since.</p><p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t believe we&#8217;ve been here this long,&#8221; Kornfeld said.</p><p>&#8220;My brothers and I have grown up in this building, watching my father and my uncle build the foundation,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We&#8217;re very proud of the fact that when people think of Wilkes-Barre, The Woodlands always seem to be in the conversation.&#8221;</p><style>
