LEHMAN TWP. &#8212; Just as those pesky Berwick long-range bombers began threatening all that good work Madison Borum did under the basket, Lake-Lehman&#8217;s big girl had a big message.&#8220;I said, `We just need teamwork,&#8217;&#8221; Borum said. &#8220;I did not want to lose that game at all.&#8221;She made sure the Black Knights didn&#8217;t.The 6-foot-2 Borum scored the last seven of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as Lehman thwarted Berwick&#8217;s comeback bid and gained the edge for the Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball league playoff berth with a 48-38 victory Wednesday at Lake-Lehman High School.&#8220;It means a lot,&#8221; Borum, a senior, said. &#8220;For us, it was the best game of the year right now.&#8221;And maybe the most important one.The victory allowed Lake-Lehman to pass Berwick by percentage points for second place in the District 2 Class 4A standings and in the WVC wild card race for the league playoffs, which will also include the WVC&#8217;s three division winners. Both teams are 16-4 overall, with two games remaining in the regular season.&#8220;This win will put us up to the two seed in districts,&#8221; Lehman coach Charlie Lavan said. &#8220;That&#8217;s our goal, we want to have the two seed in district and make the league playoffs.&#8221;They made both those aspirations a possibility by feeding the most dominant player on the court.Borum scored seven points in the first half as Lehman built leads of 12-6 in the first quarter and 28-19 by halftime, boosting its advantage to 11 points twice in the second quarter on baskets by Corinna Scoblick and Chase Purdy.But Borum&#8217;s biggest presence came on defense, where she pulled down six rebounds for the game, blocked six shots and made Berwick&#8217;s usual drives to the basket pretty much off-limits.&#8220;I knew my team was capable of beating them,&#8221; Borum said. &#8220;We made it happen.&#8221;Not without a challenge, though.Borum spent big stretches of the second and third quarters on the bench in foul trouble, and Berwick decided to pose some problems of its own.Guards Renny Murphy and Abby Burt each buried two 3-pointers in the third quarter, which Murphy&#8217;s second trey pulling the Bulldogs within 32-30 and Burt&#8217;s second long-range bomb closing Berwick&#8217;s gap to a single point.Then 6-foot center Megan Dalo got loose for her only points of the night, tying the score for the first time with a free throw and then using a deft fake and hook to give the Bulldogs their only lead, 36-34 in the final 1:34 of the third period.&#8220;To their credit, they came back strong,&#8221; Lavan said of the Bulldogs. &#8220;But our girls kept their composure nicely and followed the gameplan. It worked well.&#8221;The plan was simple.When Berwick struck back, the Black Knights went straight to their big girl.&#8220;Right back to here,&#8221; Lavan said.Borum took it from there, taking over the final period.She tied the game at 36-36 with a short inside shot, later converted a three-point play for a five-point Lehman lead, and used a strong inside move to post up for another bucket and a seven-point advantage for the Black Knights midway through the quarter. All the while, she neutralized Berwick&#8217;s sizable front line.&#8220;I love playing against girls the same height as me,&#8221; Borum said.Lehman pretty much killed the clock from there while ending the game on an eight-point run. Savannah Purdy added 12 points in the victory and Corinna Scoblick&#8217;s trey for the game-opening points had the Black Knights playing from ahead for most of the night.&#8220;It was really important,&#8221; Borum said of the victory. &#8220;It showed we can play great. It&#8217;s our defense. We just kept communicating together. Everybody knew where everybody was.&#8221;Now, the Black Knights are in position to control their postseason destiny, although keeping it in their hands could prove a tough task. They moved to 13-2 in league play and passed 12-3 Berwick for second place in the WVC Division 2, but host division-leading and 14-0 Holy Redeemer on Friday.But Wednesday&#8217;s win has the Black Knights feeling like no challenge is insurmountable.&#8221;It gives us a lot of confidence going into that game,&#8221; Lavan said. &#8220;Our goal is to give them (the Royals) their first league loss. We know it&#8217;s going to be a challenge. But if we lost this, it would have been a little bit devastating, with everything on the line.&#8221;Dallas 54, Coughlin 11Lauren Charlton scored 14 points and Deanna Wallace added 12 as Dallas defeated host Coughlin.Ajayla Butts scored seven points to pace Coughlin.Nanticoke Area 46, Tunkhannock 28Riley Baird scored 14 points and Lauren Casey added eight as Nanticoke Area defeated Tunkhannock.Eight players scored for Nanticoke Area, which led 16-6 after one quarter.Annaliese Verbeek led Tunkhannock with 10.Wyoming Valley West 59, Crestwood 35Toni Amato scored 21 points and Nicole Boutanos added 12 as the Spartans eased away in the third quarter.Helene Jardine had 14 for Crestwood.Holy Redeemer 64, Wyoming Area 14Julia Andrejko scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter as the Royals took control early to rout Wyomng Area and clinch at least a tie for the WVC Division 2 title.Sam Yencha added 12 for Redeemer, which had nine players figure in the scoring.Aleah Kranson had five points for Wyoming Area.Meyers 48, Northwest 33Meyers scored 22 of its 48 points on free throws in its win over Northwest, knocking the Rangers from contention for their third straight WVC Division 3 title.Alana Germano led Meyers with 13 points, including a 11-for-14 performance from the foul line. Danyia Ballard added 11.Brenna Brdaric scored 12 and Reagan Harrison added 11 for Northwest.Wyoming Seminary 50, GAR 47 OTAlex Wesneski scored 20 and Mia Raineri had 12 as Wyoming Seminary locked up the WVC Division 3 title.GAR scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime only for the Blue Knights to pull out a win in the extra frame.Vanessa Luna netted 15 for GAR, which trailed 30-23 entering the fourth. Gloria Adjayi had 10.The victory moved Sem to 9-4 in Division 3 with two games remaining, wrapping up the title for the Blue Knights and securing a spot in the upcoming WVC league championship playoffs when Northwest fell to 5-7 with a loss to Meyers.BOYS BASKETBALLTunkhannock 64, Wyoming Area 36Tunkhannock used a 28-point third quarter to pull away for a victory.Tyler Faux scored 21 points to lead a trio of Tunkhannock players in double figures.
