Wilkes-Barre council needs another attempt at passing higher recycling fee

HERSHEY &#8212; Brookville entered the PIAA Class 2A Team Championships on Thursday with quite a resume.The Raiders claimed the 2016 state title, are always ranked highly in the state, and is one of the teams expected to leave Giant Center with a few wins and compete for the state title again this year.But that didn&#8217;t bother a young Lake-Lehman squad. The Black Knights, consisting of mostly freshmen and sophomores, led Brookville at the halfway point of the dual, and trailed by just two points with four weights to go, before falling 40-26.In the double-elimination tournament, the Black Knights will meet Conneaut Valley at 8 a.m. Friday looking to stave off elimination. Southern Columbia, a top contender for the state title, sent the Eagles into the consolation bracket with a 62-6 win on Thursday.Hazleton Area, which joined the Black Knights in the state&#8217;s team tournament on Thursday wrestling in Class 3A, didn&#8217;t have as much luck as their WVC mate in the opening round losing 39-15 to Council Rock South to fall into the loser&#8217;s bracket. The Cougars will meet District 12&#8217;s Father Judge looking to stay alive in the tournament at 10 a.m. Friday. Father Judge fell to Dallastown 40-23.Lehman past state qualifier Bob Long (132) got the team started with a win by tech fall for a 5-3 lead. The Black Knights won three of the next four bouts as Hunter Burke (145) got a pin, and Jake Trumbower (152) and Nick Zaboski (170) won by decision to put them up 17-12 with seven bouts remaining.Brookville took the lead back with a fall and major decision at 182 and 195 before T.J. Meehan pulled out a dramatic win at 220 with a reversal at the buzzer for a 4-3 win to pull the team within 22-20 with four bouts left.&#8220;I think we represented well down here. We won six matches, I thought we could win eight,&#8221; Black Knights coach Jay Konigus said. &#8220;(Josh) Bonomo had a close one and (Zach) Stuart had a close one. I really can&#8217;t ask for anything more so I&#8217;m happy with them. We just have to come back tomorrow and win one tomorrow.&#8221;Lehman sophomore Chandler Longstrength, a first-year wrestler picked up a win by fall for the team at 120 in the last bout of the match and really impressed his coach in the process.&#8220;Everyone talks about wrestling down here on the big stage, he&#8217;s a first-year wrestler, he doesn&#8217;t know what the big stage is so I&#8217;m ecstatically happy for him,&#8221; Konigus said.Hazleton Area was overmatched from the start against the Golden Hawks, who are expected to finish in the top 4 in the state, losing the first five bouts and getting in a 25-0 hole.Charles Everdale got the Cougars on the board with a decision at 145. Jayson Brielmeier added a decision at 182 as did Seth Hunsinger at 220 before Shane Noonan picked up a pin at 285 for the team&#8217;s scores. The Cougars also lost two close bouts by four combined points. The Golden Hawks controlled the dual by wrestling in neutral and beating the Cougars in takedowns 22-8.&#8220;Honestly, I&#8217;m a little disappointed because I think they controlled the match and they took it to us,&#8221; Hazleton Area coach Keith Maurer said. &#8220;Overall, we pride ourselves on wrestling on our feet, and they took control of that and we ended up wrestling their game.&#8221;Now, it&#8217;s a quick turnaround for the team&#8217;s match against Father Judge, but Maurer said his wrestlers will put the loss behind them and be ready.&#8220;We gotta forget about this and put this out of our mind and come back against Father Judge and see if we can put together a match like we have in the past, where we take it to them and we control the match,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re capable of doing it.
