Our View: World could use more love, and not just on Valentine’s Day

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; A drug suspect smashed into a township police vehicle Wednesday night after officers raided his motel room and found approximately $11,000 of cocaine, authorities reported.</p><p>Clyde Joye Randle, 43, of Carey Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, was later denied bail because he is believed to be &#8220;a flight risk and a danger to society,&#8221; according to court records. He was locked up at the county jail.</p><p>Randle was not present when police and a K9 dog executed a search warrant at 4:50 p.m. at his room at the Econo Lodge that sits behind Perkins restaurant on Route 309.</p><p>During the search, officers said they found about 119 grams of cocaine, which is slightly more than a quarter of a pound, plus some marijuana in a backpack. Police also said they found a pay stub for Randle inside the backpack.</p><p>A criminal complaint picks up the story from there:</p><p>Randle returned to the motel around 7:51 p.m. as police continued their surveillance of the area.</p><p>When Randle saw officers approach with flashing lights and sirens activated on their vehicles, he &#8220;put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated rapidly.&#8221; Randle, who was driving an Acura, then put the vehicle into drive and accelerated,&#8220;striking Sgt. Mark Phillips&#8217; police cruiser with enough force to lift the passenger&#8217;s side of the defendant&#8217;s vehicle off of the pavement and deflect it off of a marked police vehicle.&#8221;</p><p>Boxed in by other officers as he kept trying to flee the motel&#8217;s parking lot, Randle crashed into a snow bank, abandoned his vehicle, then took off on foot toward the nearby Interstate 81 exit ramp. He was nabbed after a brief foot chase and arraigned on multiple charges Wednesday.</p><p>Sgt. Phillips, meanwhile, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Police said Thursday that he had been discharged from Geisinger and was back home. However, Phillips is expected to be off duty for a period of time.</p><p>Randle faces a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver, plus related misdemeanor drug charges. He also faces a felony charge of aggravated assault and misdemeanors for simple assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.</p><p>A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for 11 a.m. Feb. 21.</p><style>
