<p>Can you picture Scarlett O&#8217;Hara at 80?</p><p>Would she still have blazing green eyes and a 17-inch waist? Would she still command attention? Would she have kept her vow through all the decades, as God was her witness, to &#8220;never be hungry again?&#8221;</p><p>For fans of &#8220;Gone With the Wind,&#8221; there&#8217;s no need to ponder a gray-haired, senior Scarlett. Thanks to author Margaret Mitchell and to actress Vivien Leigh&#8217;s performance in the MGM classic movie, Scarlett is forever a feisty Southern belle, just coming of age during the prelude, duration and aftermath of the Civil War.</p><p>But speaking of the celebrated movie &#8212; which first splashed across screens in 1939 &#8212; that product of the Golden Age of Hollywood does turn 80 this year.</p><p>In celebration of the milestone, Fathom Events and Warner Bros. have scheduled several showings of &#8220;Gone With the Wind,&#8221; including 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Feb. 28 and March 3 at Cinemark 20 Moosic and AMC Bloomsburg 11.</p><p>Suspecting many people will want to attend, the companies have already planned encore screenings, at times to be announced, for March 17 and March 18.</p><p>What is it about this movie that has captivated viewers for 80 years?</p><p>&#8220;I like the drama of it all,&#8221; said film buff Chris Bedwick, of Plains Township. &#8220;The storyline is so very dramatic, from the personal lives to what was happening in the country. The way the movie was made they show you all of that, in blazing color.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It has a lot of good lines that people know and quote,&#8221; she added.</p><p>Oh, yes, from &#8220;After all, tomorrow is another day&#8221; to &#8220;Heaven help the Yankees if they capture you,&#8221; to &#8220;I don&#8217;t know nothin&#8217; &#8216;bout birthin&#8217; babies,&#8221; there are many unforgettable lines.</p><p>&#8220;I think I may have been a Southern belle in a past life,&#8221; Mary Kiewlak, of Nanticoke, said with a laugh, explaining why GWTW is one of her favorite movies. &#8220;It&#8217;s not that I&#8217;d want to go back to the days of slavery but it&#8217;s so interesting to see the beauty of the old houses and the way they dressed and to contrast that with the war and the hardships.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know if I can pick a favorite scene,&#8221; Kiewlak continued. &#8220;But I like to watch Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in those roles (as Scarlett O&#8217;Hara and her third husband, Rhett Butler).&#8221;</p><p>Chosen for the leading role after a nation-wide &#8220;search for Scarlett,&#8221; Leigh wore green contact lenses to fit the heroine&#8217;s description and, in the pre-war scenes, appeared in voluminous gowns that contributed to the film&#8217;s lavish $3.9 million budget.</p><p>&#8220;The costumes were great,&#8221; Joe Kozokos of Luzerne reminisced.</p><p>&#8220;And the romance,&#8221; said his wife, Dorothy.</p><p>The Kozokoses know something about romance; they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary earlier this week.</p><p>Scarlett&#8217;s relationships, in contrast, are nowhere near as steady and long-lasting.</p><p>The most popular young woman in the county when she&#8217;s 16, she thinks she wants the one man she can&#8217;t have &#8212; the scholarly Ashley Wilkes &#8212; and while he remains committed to his wife, Melanie, Scarlett embarks on two short marriages, first to the young Charles Hamilton and later to the too-old Frank Kennedy.</p><p>When she finally marries Rhett Butler &#8230;. well, things don&#8217;t work out perfectly.</p><p>The movie ends, famously, with his &#8220;Frankly, my dear, I don&#8217;t give a damn&#8221; and her desperate wish to get him back.</p><p>&#8220;Lots of people say that&#8217;s it, that he was finished with her. But I think she&#8217;d be able to get him back,&#8221; Bedwick said, imagining an epilogue. &#8220;She was so determined; she would always get what she wanted.&#8221;</p><style>
