<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The last time Wyoming Valley West made the District 2 finals, Jessica Shaver had a pretty paltry role.</p><p>She played a much bigger part in helping the Spartans go back.</p><p>Shaver scored all 10 of her points within a six-minute span of the second quarter Saturday as Valley West earned its second trip in three years to the District 2 Class 5A championship Mohegan Sun Arena by collapsing Crestwood 51-21 in a district semifinal at King&#8217;s College.</p><p>&#8220;Best feeling,&#8221; said Shaver, a 5-foot-10 junior forward. &#8220;Last time we went, I wasn&#8217;t really playing varsity. I was a water girl for the Arena. Knowing I might have helped us get there again is so exciting.&#8221;</p><p>Her play in the second quarter helped the 16-8 Spartans recover from some early struggles against 4-20 Crestwood in a battle of the last two Class 5A district runner-ups.</p><p>Both teams lost to three-time defending district champion Abington Heights in the last two title games. And Valley West will see top-seeded Abington Heights again at 6 p.m. next Saturday at the Arena, after 19-5 Abington Heights downed North Pocono, 42-31 in the other district semifinal.</p><p>Initially, the third-seeded Spartans seemed as if they&#8217;d struggle to get there against a No. 7 Crestwood team they&#8217;d already beaten twice in Wyoming Valley Conference play and won for just the fourth time this season in a stunning 55-53 quarterfinal upset of No. 2 Wallepaupack.</p><p>Riley Magin hit a 3-pointer and a jumper as Crestwood scored four baskets in the first four minutes to jump to a 9-4 lead.</p><p>But the Comets didn&#8217;t score again from the floor for the next 21 minutes, producing just six points from the foul line in the middle quarters until Helena Jardine scored on a layup a minute into the fourth quarter.</p><p>By then, Valley West had a 27-point lead.</p><p>&#8220;They were intense,&#8221; Valley West coach Gary Ferenchick said of the Comets. &#8220;I&#8217;m sure they were still on a good high from their win against Wallenpaupack. They came out ready to play and we came out flat.&#8221;</p><p>Shaver quickly shifted the Spartans into high gear.</p><p>Her inside basket tied the game at 10-10, then she hit another and another and another until Valley West had a 27-10 lead by halftime.</p><p>&#8220;I think we started getting into our game,&#8221; Shaver said, &#8220;which got me more into hit. I hit one basket, then another basket, which got me excited.&#8221;</p><p>It turned out those five second-quarter baskets &#8212; the second which gave the Spartnas the lead to keep &#8212; were the only points Shaver produced. But they were all she needed to finish as the team&#8217;s high scorer.</p><p>That&#8217;s because Shaver and her teammates locked-down Crestwood&#8217;s leading scorer Jardine, who finished with a game-high 15 points &#8212; but with 10 of them coming in the first quarter after Valley West built a 42-15 lead.</p><p>&#8220;Jessica, when she gets going, she gets in the flow,&#8221; Ferenchick said. &#8220;She&#8217;s quick and can get to the basket.
