<p>SCRANTON &#8212; The long drought ended for one program Tuesday night and continued for another.</p><p>Tunkhannock was the latter.</p><p>The Tigers chased a deficit the entire second half, but was unable to catch Western Wayne as the Wildcats posted a 53-39 victory in the District 2 Class 4A boys basketball third-place game at Scranton High School.</p><p>Western Wayne (14-11) claimed a PIAA Class 4A state playoff spot with the win, giving the program its first state berth since 1993. Back then, Western Wayne qualified as the District 12 Class 3A champion. That District 12, which consisted of teams from the northeast corner of the state, was absorbed into District 2 a few years later. The current District 12 is Philadelphia.</p><p>&#8220;1993 was the last time? That&#8217;s amazing,&#8221; said Western Wayne guard Dahlton Frisbie, whose six 3-pointers and 24 points went a long way to getting the Wildcats into states. &#8220;It&#8217;s amazing to change the program.&#8221;</p><p>Amazing for Western Wayne. Not so for Tunkhannock, which was trying to break its own 26-year absence from the state tournament. The Tigers made states in 1993 as the D2-4A runner-up. The Tigers ended their season at 14-11.</p><p>&#8220;We definitely had our ups and downs throughout the year,&#8221; Tunkhannock third-year coach Spencer Lunger said, &#8220;but towards the end of the year, especially in the playoffs, I thought we were playing our best basketball. Hats off to Western Wayne. They played a great game and had a great gameplan against us. But the program is moving in the right direction.</p><p>&#8220;I feel bad for our seniors. We were one step away from that big tournament.&#8221;</p><p>And a few points away entering the fourth quarter. Frisbie changed that.</p><p>Tunkhannock closed within 33-30 to end the third quarter, but a pair of 3-pointers by Frisbie pumped the lead to 40-30 less than three minutes into the fourth.</p><p>The Tigers made one final run at the deficit, scoring four of six points from the foul line in a 25-second span. Tyler Faux hit a free throw and missed the second, but rebounded and scored and was fouled again. His last free-throw toss moved the Tigers within 40-36 with 4:40 left.</p><p>Tunkhannock, though, scored three more points the rest of the way. The 3-point shooting that was extremely sharp in a 49-48 semifinal loss to Nanticoke Area struggled Tuesday. The Tigers had eight 3-pointers vs. Nanticoke Area, but only three against Western Wayne.</p><p>Tunkhannock&#8217;s 6-foot-8 center Avery Billings was strong early, but Western Wayne was able to slow him down eventually with 6-7 center Zach Rovinsky. The guards were unable to shake loose for 3-pointers to loosen up the Wildcat defense. Tunkhannock&#8217;s last lead was 14-13 on a drive by sophomore Ryan Harder with 1:06 lead until halftime.</p><p>Faux finished with 14 points in his final game for Tunkhannock.</p><p>Western Wayne will be off until March 8 when it plays in the state tournament against the District 4 champion.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a three-year grind for us,&#8221; said Western Wayne coach Al Semenza, who spent nearly three decades at Old Forge and a pair of years at Wyoming Area. &#8220;Western Wayne basketball was down for a while. I&#8217;m so proud of what they&#8217;ve done everyday in the gym.</p><p>&#8220;A new coaching staff walks in and it&#8217;s not always easy for guys.
