Wintry weather to blast the area again

<p>BETHLEHEM &#8212; Getting slammed in a match can be downright scary.</p><p>It can worry coaches, parents, fans and wrestlers.</p><p>But when Cooper Price was the recipient of a flagrant move on Friday in the Class 3A Northeast Regional Tournament, he used it as motivation.</p><p>After getting slammed to the mat in his 106-pound quarterfinal bout against Liberty&#8217;s Connor Werner, Coughlin coaches ran to the other side of the mat with a concerned look. But the Coughlin freshman jumped right up then dominated.</p><p>&#8220;It kinda knocked the wind out of me a little but I got back up pretty fast,&#8221; Price said. &#8220;I got mad and wanted to pin him.&#8221;</p><p>Price did just that pinning Werner in 3:10 to be one of five semifinalists from the Wyoming Valley Conference at Liberty High School. Due to inclement weather in the Lehigh Valley, the tournament will start an hour later today with the second round of consolations now beginning at 10:30 a.m, and the semifinals at noon. The finals and consolation finals are scheduled for 6 p.m.</p><p>Price, the No. 1 seed in the 106-pound bracket who only had to wrestle once on Friday, is joined in the semis by Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s David Krokowski (126 pounds), Hazleton Area&#8217;s Shane Noonan (220) and Dallas&#8217; Steven Newell (182) and Shawn Henniger (285).</p><p>&#8220;I gotta keep my head on straight,&#8221; Price said. &#8220;Even if I do get one win, I want to win this and get that nice seed at states and hopefully win.&#8221;</p><p>Krokowski, Newell and Noonan also only had to wrestle once on the tournament&#8217;s first day to reach the semis. Henniger needed to win twice, and did so with a decision in the preliminary round before notching a pin in the quarters.</p><p>Henniger, who was district runner-up last weekend after winning district gold last season, let out a big roar after winning his quarterfinal bout against Bethlehem Catholic&#8217;s Jase Crouse by fall in 2:12.</p><p>&#8220;I was expecting it to be a one-point match, be a close match and I felt him come out and I sunk him right back in for the pin,&#8221; Henniger said. &#8220;It gives me a little more confidence to go in (to the semi), but this next match coming in is gonna be a tough one and we&#8217;ll see how it goes out.&#8221;</p><p>Krokowski defeated Liberty&#8217;s Mike Torres 4-0 to reach the semis. Krokowski got the takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second before holding off shots from Torres in the third after being in neutral the whole period.</p><p>&#8220;It really ups my ante and I&#8217;m looking to make it to the finals now,&#8221; Krokowski said. &#8220;I was just playing it safe (up 4-0) and not give up any openings or anything like that. I just wanted to stay on my toes, don&#8217;t let him work the edges for any of that big stuff. So I just stayed in the middle and tried to make him work for it.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m in the semis for the first time at regionals, but I&#8217;m looking for the finals now. I&#8217;m not just looking for the semis. I want to come out, be in the parade of champions and get a better look for me at states.&#8221;</p><p>Noonan, who is one just three unbeaten wrestlers in the tourney, had one of his toughest matches of the year against Nazareth&#8217;s Stephen Schott. With the score even at 1-1 late in the third period, Noonan picked up a takedown with 15 seconds left. After Schott escaped three seconds later, Noonan fended off a last-ditch effort for a takedown to hang on for the win and improve to 39-0 this season.</p><p>Newell, the No. 1 seed in his bracket, had another typical match winning by major decision over Liberty&#8217;s Kevin Hennessy, 8-0.</p><p>To reach the semifinals with one of his good friends, is special for Henniger, it would be even better if they both get wins in the semifinals.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very special,&#8221; Henniger said. &#8220;He&#8217;s a great friend of mine and we&#8217;ll have some fun tonight and get back at it tomorrow. One match at a time, feel the kids out and see how things go.&#8221;</p><p>Krokowski, Newell and Noonan are all trying to return to the state tournament and will with one more win, either in the semis or the consolation semis.</p><p>Wrestlers from District 2 had a good showing in the pigtail round with 24 wins, but that number dropped to eight wins in the quarters. Those who lost in the quarterfinals will now have to win three times Saturday in the wrestlebacks to be guaranteed a finish in the top four and reach the state tournament. One of those wrestlers to fall in the quarters in Krokowski&#8217;s teammate J.J. White. Krokowski lost last year in the quarters then rebounded to reach states.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sure he&#8217;s gonna fight back and come with a tough third, tough fourth,&#8221; Krokowski said. &#8220;I have a lot of confidence in him to make it.&#8221;</p><style>
