H.S. Boys Basketball: Crestwood falls short in D2-5A title game

<p>The all-star broke the ice. The goaltender shined. The veterans came through in the shootout. And Wilkes-Barre/Scranton picked up two points that the Penguins absolutely needed.</p><p>After Ethan Prow scored in regulation, Tristan Jarry made 34 saves and two more stops in the shootout while Ben Sexton and Joseph Cramarossa converted to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory at Providence on Friday.</p><p>Only a Providence tying goal in the third prevented the night from being a complete success, as the Bruins picked up a point by forcing overtime.</p><p>Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (27-22-5-2) now has 61 points, four behind Providence for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. With the win, the Penguins also moved a point ahead of Lehigh Valley into fifth place.</p><p>After two scoreless periods in which Jarry had 21 saves and Bruins counterpart Zane McIntyre had 17, Prow continued his breakout season by scoring his 16th goal just 44 seconds into the third.</p><p>Making his Wilkes-Barre/Scranton debut, fellow defenseman Chris Wideman picked up the primary assist with Sam Lafferty adding the other helper. Wideman also endeared himself to his new teammates a period earlier by dropping the gloves with Bruins winger Anton Blidh.</p><p>Providence&#8217;s blueline needed just five minutes to find the answer to Prow&#8217;s goal, as Chris Breen tied the game at 1-1.</p><p>Both penalty kill units came through by finishing 5-for-5, with the Bruins also managing to kill off a hooking penalty in overtime to send the game to a shootout.</p><p>McIntyre managed to stop Sam Miletic to open the shooutout, but Jarry answered the bell with saves on Paul Carey and NHL veteran Lee Stempniak. Sexton and Cramarossa both scored to end the game before the Bruins sent out a third shooter.</p><p>The Penguins have a chance to gain more ground on Saturday night when they stay in New England to take on last-place Hartford at 7:05 p.m.</p><style>
