Students named to dean’s list at Penn State/Wilkes-Barre

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; If you need a hole for a fence post, well, who says you have to use a shovel or an auger?</p><p>Certainly not Canadian-American comedian Red Green, who believes &#8220;any tool can be the right tool.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Get yourself a jack,&#8221; Green says in a video clip you can watch on his Facebook page.</p><p>&#8220;And squat,&#8221; he adds as he bends his knees and uses the jack to lift his Dodge truck, apparently making more of an indentation in the ground with each ratchet.</p><p>Green is scheduled to bring his wry humor &#8212; and, no doubt, one red suspender and one green &#8212; to Wilkes-Barre at 7 p.m. March 28, when his &#8220;This Could Be It&#8221; show comes to the F.M. Kirby Center.</p><p>Fans of Green&#8217;s comedy know he presides over the Possum Lodge, the laid-back kind of place where you might find a vintage snow shoe or a dart board on the wall, maybe a polar bearskin rug on the floor, and of course, plenty of advice on such manly topics as home and auto repairs.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m actually a handy guy,&#8221; Green&#8217;s alter ego, Steve Smith, said in a telephone interview. &#8220;If you&#8217;ve got something that&#8217;s broken and needs to work right away, like a car that needs to run, I&#8217;m your guy. If you need something that needs to look good, like a rec room, I am not your guy.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Handy guy&#8221; Red Green uses a certain sticky material for so many repairs he calls himself an &#8220;ambassador for Scotch Brand Duct Tape.&#8221; He&#8217;s also &#8220;a firm believer that no repair job should outlive you.&#8221;</p><p>Because he&#8217;s at heart an outdoorsman who seeks peace and quiet, Smith said, Green sees advantages to picking &#8220;hobbies nobody else in the family wants to do.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s where ice fishing and cross-country skiing and snow-showing came from,&#8221; he said.</p><p>But even if Red Green would prefer the solitude of ice fishing, the man behind the persona, Smith, enjoyed a Disney cruise a few weeks ago with a dozen family members, including Morag, his wife of 53 years.</p><p>&#8220;There were 13 of us and six were kids under 11,&#8221; he said, describing the best part of the week as &#8220;all 13 of us got together for dinner every night. Everybody showed up and nobody had a meltdown.&#8221;</p><p>Smith, who grew up in Canada, developed a flair for entertaining as a kid with access to his grandmother&#8217;s many hats.</p><p>&#8220;She was born in the 1890s so she had those flapper hats and you name it,&#8221; he said, remembering how he would put on a hat and portray different characters to amuse his friends, in the style of comedians he saw on television.</p><p>&#8220;You could watch Sid Caesar or Jonathan Winters grab a prop and have fun with it,&#8221; he reminisced. &#8220;That&#8217;s probably where I picked it up.&#8221;</p><p>Smith believes this tour is probably his last, but he&#8217;s not sure, hence the &#8220;This Could Be It&#8221; name.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m leaving the door open, but it&#8217;s a really tiny door,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I ended my TV series (&#8220;The Red Green&#8221; show, in 2006) and I could have done another three or four years while it was still good and fun, not beat it to death.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I think this is going to be it,&#8221; he said of the tour. &#8220;But I didn&#8217;t commit to it just in case I change my mind.&#8221;</p><style>
