<p>LUZERNE &#8212; One man was able to escape, but two pets perished as flames tore through a borough home Sunday afternoon.</p><p>A cat and a dog died from smoke inhalation, according to Luzerne Borough Fire Chief Ron Rahl.</p><p>Rahl said the call for the working structure fire at 572 Miller St., at approximately 12:15 p.m. Crews were able to control the blaze within 20 minutes.</p><p>Rahl said two people live at the residence.</p><p>&#8220;One was able to escape with no injuries,&#8221; the chief said. &#8220;The other occupant was away on vacation.&#8221;</p><p>The American Red Cross is assisting both people since the fire displaced them from their home.</p><p>Rahl said the fire started in the back of the residence in the pantry area.</p><p>The chief did say there was extensive fire damage in the kitchen and living room area&#8217;s of the home along with significant water and smoke damage to the rest of the home.</p><p>The cause of the fire was still undetermined Sunday evening, Rahl said, adding: &#8220;We don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s suspicious.&#8221;</p><p>Aside from the Luzerne Borough Fire Department, fire crews from Kingston, Swoyersville and Pringle and Hanover Township responded to battle the flames.</p><style>
