Hayes’ hat trick fuels WBS Penguins’ critical win over Phantoms

<p>We&#8217;ve heard you.</p><p>And trust us, we get it.</p><p>You don&#8217;t like the county government. Or just about any local government for that matter. The home rule system needs to be revised. Luzerne County Council is a horrible minder of your tax dollars. And on and on and on.</p><p>OK, not everyone in the county feels that way. But we hear from a very vocal group on a daily basis about how inefficient and ineffectual our elected leaders are in Northeastern Pennsylvania.</p><p>Sometimes callers and commentators make valid points. Sometimes it sounds like they are complaining just because it&#8217;s what they do. But that&#8217;s not the point of this editorial.</p><p>The point is to remind you that once again the time is approaching when you can have a say in the matter.</p><p>The primary election is just around the corner &#8211; May 21.</p><p>Eleven Luzerne County residents &#8211; seven Democrats and four Republicans &#8211; will be running for county council, according to staff writer Jen Learn-Andes&#8217; story in Wednesday&#8217;s Times Leader.</p><p>The Democratic contenders: Patrick Bilbow, Martin Dartoe, Tim McGinley, Anup Patel, Robert Schnee, Joseph C. Sebastianelli and Jane Walsh Waitkus.</p><p>On the Republican side, the candidates are: Walter Griffith, Kendra Radle, Stephen J. Urban and Gregory Wolovich.</p><p>Staff writer Mark Guydish tells us that several school board races feature unusually crowded races. In Wilkes-Barre Area and Crestwood, Mark reports, groups formed in opposition to many board decisions in recent years have names attempting to get on the ballot.</p><p>Of course, the planned consolidation of the three Wilkes-Barre Area high schools is a continuing hot-button topic.</p><p>And there are plenty of races at the municipal level, including in Wilkes-Barre where Mayor Tony George faces a challenge from George Brown in the primary.</p><p>So if you are really unhappy with the direction of local government, be sure you are registered to vote by April 22.</p><p>Then, we beg you to do one more thing &#8211; step away from the keyboard and take some time to learn about the candidates.</p><p>You won&#8217;t affect any positive change in the region with uninformed votes.</p><p>Heck, if you really want to help area government improve, volunteer to work for your favorite candidate and spend some time helping others make informed decisions.</p><p>Then quite possibly, after the election, you won&#8217;t have as much to complain about.</p><p style="text-align: right;"><em>&#8211; Times Leader</em></p><style>
