Beyond the Byline: ‘Lefty’ always got the call right

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Peanut butter entrepreneur Bruce Gutterman came up with an idea for a cartoon and it has now been published in a major business trade journal.</p><p>But the subject has nothing to do with peanut butter. The cartoon is about edible cannabis.</p><p>Gutterman, who has become a peanut butter magnate &#8212; his company in Kingston is called Flavors-R-Specialty &#8212; came up with the idea while visiting his brother, Dr. Jerome Gutterman, a renowned dental specialist in Sacramento.</p><p>The cartoon has been published in the March 2019 edition of <em>Cannabis Products</em>. The first issue is being distributed worldwide as a supplement with BNP Media&#8217;s <em>Prepared Foods</em> and <em>Food Engineering</em> publications, plus its online edition called <em>Food Safety Strategies</em>. </p><p>&#8220;I was reading the newspaper at my brother&#8217;s and I came across a lot of stories about cannabis,&#8221; said Gutterman. &#8220;It seemed like (cannabis) was everywhere out there.&#8221;</p><p>So he contacted the editor of <em>Marijuana Ventures Magazine</em> and told him about his cartoon proposal.</p><p>&#8220;He liked the idea and gave me the name of a freelance cartoonist, Robert Steinhilber,&#8221; Gutterman recalled.</p><p>He and Steinhilber then worked together to bring the idea to light. It shows a couple leaving &#8220;Bud&#8217;s Bakery Joint&#8221; (get it) &#8212; a place that sells &#8220;really baked goods&#8221; (get it). The man is holding a muffin and he asks, &#8220;How the heck are we supposed to get this thing lit?&#8221; &#8212; Gutterman&#8217;s punchline.</p><p>Gutterman has done his homework on the subject. He said projections show cannabis is currently a $16 billion industry. Within two years, it&#8217;s expected to grow to $30 billion.</p><p>Gutterman said he has been coming up with clever names for cannabis food products. He only revealed one name &#8212; &#8220;POT-tato Chips.&#8221; (get it.) Gutterman said he has many more.</p><p>But Gutterman also has concerns, like portion control and how the cannabis food products might lead to impairment and the effects on a person&#8217;s mental capacity.</p><p>&#8220;They call it recreational use,&#8221; Gutterman said. &#8220;I spell it &#8216;wreckreational.&#8217; I worry about the Achilles heel. The industry better find out what that could be. This whole industry needs to be carefully monitored.&#8221;</p><p>Gutterman&#8217;s peanut butter is used in many top name-brand ice creams and snacks. But because of non-disclosure agreements, the names of those products cannot be released.</p><p>Gutterman pioneered the development of peanut butter-filled pretzel nuggets and the use of peanut butter in ice cream.</p><style>
