GAR’s Johnson stars in fast-paced Battle of the Valley Classic boys game

<p>SCRANTON &#8211; Much of the Battle of the Valley All-Star Basketball Classic opener was fought in the paint Sunday at the Lackawanna College Student Center.</p><p>Lake-Lehman&#8217;s Madison Borum and Dunmore&#8217;s Victoria Toomey, a pair of 6-foot-1 post players, did not wander far from there often while leading their teams in the senior game between District 2&#8217;s two leagues.</p><p>Borum was the game&#8217;s top scorer while Toomey was the leading scorer on the winning side in the Lackawanna League&#8217;s 77-55 victory over the Wyoming Valley Conference.</p><p>While often going head-to-head, both players also led their teams in blocked shots.</p><p>Toomey, a 2018 all-state selection who was one of the key players in Dunmore&#8217;s run to the state championship game during a 29-1 season that ended last week, finished with 15 points and six blocks.</p><p>Borum shot 7-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line while leading the WVC with 19 points and three blocks. She also grabbed six rebounds and stepped outside just long enough to make her only 3-pointer.</p><p>Toomey, who is headed to Rider University, making her the only committed NCAA Division I scholarship player in the game, found a worthy adversary in the leader of the Lake-Lehman team that made the second round of the state Class 4A tournament.</p><p>&#8220;Madison Borum is a great player,&#8221; Toomey said. &#8220;It was fun to play against her and play against someone who is similar height and talent-wise.</p><p>&#8220; &#8230; I was pleasantly surprised with how much inside game there was.&#8221;</p><p>The WVC took only three of its first-half shots from beyond the arc and tried only 10 of its 58 field goal attempts from 3-point range.</p><p>The Lackawanna League mixed things up more, getting three first-half 3-pointers from Wallenpaupack&#8217;s Megan Guerrieri, who also made a steal and off-balanced, left-handed 15-footer at the buzzer for a 44-22 halftime lead.</p><p>Savannah Purdy, Borum&#8217;s Lake-Lehman teammate, sparked a fast start to the second half as the WVC tried to fight back.</p><p>Purdy had steals on the first two Lackawanna possessions, setting up a score by Holy Redeemer&#8217;s Julia Andrejko, then producing a three-point play on her own.</p><p>When Borum followed with her 3-pointer, the Lackawanna League lead went from 22 to 14 in just 1:15.</p><p>Western Wayne&#8217;s Gracie Guarino, who finished with 12 points, hit a 3-pointer to settle the Lackawanna and the WVC could not get any closer than 51-38 midway through the third quarter.</p><p>Lake-Lehman and Nanticoke each had three players and Holy Redeemer had two on the WVC team coached by Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s Abbey Rodway.</p><p>Northwest&#8217;s Brenna Babcock made her last four shots while scoring 10 of her 13 points in the second half.</p><p>Megan Dalo from Berwick grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.</p><p>The WVC won, 87-70, last year at Wilkes University when the game made it debut.</p><p><strong>BATTLE OF VALLEY CLASSIC BOYS</strong></p><p><strong>Lackawanna League 105, Wyoming Valley Conference 94</strong></p><p><strong>WYOMING VALLEY CONFERENCE (94) &#8212;</strong> Nate Kreitzer 2 2-2 7, Will Johnson 7 3-5 20, Sean Murphy 2 0-0 6, Tyler Faux 4 2-2 13, Zahary Evans 3 2-2 9, Matt Marchetti 4 2-2 11, Camden Boris 1 0-0 3, Collin Cook 3 0-0 8, Dimitri Gnall 1 0-0 2, Nick Ganter 1 0-3 2, Nick Prociak 5 3-4 13. <strong>Totals 33 14-20 94.</strong></p><p><strong>LACKAWANNA LEAGUE (105) &#8212;</strong> Dahlton Frisbie 2 0-0 6, Brian Boland 1 0-0 2, Marc Kudrich 1 0-0 2, Marcus Bauman 6 3-4 15, Tyler Mozeleski 1 0-0 3, Mario Rotell 6 4-4 19, Leo O&#8217;Boyle 6 1-2 16, George Tinsley 5 4-4 15, Blake Gearhart 3 0-0 7, Mikey Schermerhorn 0 0-0 0, Jake Curnow 3 1-2 9, Trey Koehler 5 1-1 11. <strong>Totals 39 14-17 105.</strong></p><p><strong>Halftime &#8211; </strong><strong>Lackawanna, 50-47. </strong><strong>Three-point goals &#8212;</strong> WVC 14 (Johnson 3, Faux 3, Murphy 2, Cook 2, Kreitzer, Evans, Marchetti, Boris), LL 13 (Rotell 3, O&#8217;Boyle 3, Frisbie 2, Curnow 2, Mozeleski, Tinsley, Gearhart).</p><style>
